DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University football program saw 12 of its former standouts, 10 from the 2015 senior class, show off their speed, strength and skills to representatives of 12 professional football organizations as NIU held its annual Pro Day at the Kenneth and Ellen Chessick Practice Center Friday.
Wide receivers Juwan Brescacin (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Culver Academy) and Tommylee Lewis (Riviera Beach, Fla./W.T. Dwyer), defensive linemen Ben Compton (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) and Perez Ford (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville), offensive linemen Aidan Conlon (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and Andrew Ness (O’Fallon, Mo./Christian Brothers College), defensive backs Paris Logan (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) and Marlon Moore (Mobile, Ala./C.F. Vigor), tight end Desroy Maxwell (Evanston, Ill./Amundsen) and linebacker Boomer Mays (Lawrence, Kan./Eudora) took part in the three-hour workout. Members of the 2014 football team, safety Dechane Durante and Cameron Stingily, returned back to DeKalb to take part in NIU’s Pro Day as well.
The day began inside the sports performance center of the Yordon Center with the vertical jump. Brescacin was first up and set the bar high for the rest of the group, jumping 36.5 inches. It was the best performance by a Huskie on the day. Logan and Moore came in right behind him, posting a 36 and 35.5-inch, respectively. Mays and Lewis each jumped 34 inches.
“This just another piece of the puzzle,” Mays said of Pro Day. “There’s film. They want to see you workout, a lot of things go into it. I just feel like it’s another piece.”
Activities then moved onto the bench where the D-line starred. Four Huskies pressed 225, 20 times or more with Compton recording 29 reps and Ford putting up 225 pounds 27 times. Mays and Maxwell both tallied 20 reps as well.
The scouts and athletes then headed into the Chessick Center for the remainder of the day. After taking part in the broad jump, the dozen Huskies took their crack at the 40-yard dash. Not surprisingly, Lewis topped the charts clocking a 4.52 40, while Logan was right behind him with a 4.59. Brescacin turned in an impressive 4.62 40. Logan and Brescacin were one and two on the three-cone drill, with Logan posting a 6.94 and Brescacin scoring a 7.03.
“It was a solid day,” Brescacin said. “I think I did better than people expected me to do. That’s all I really wanted, was to go out there and compete, show the scouts that I could do it.”
Scouts from 12 NFL teams – Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, New England Patriots, Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks – were in attendance Friday.
As testing concluded, the players then took part in the skills portion of the day. Former NIU quarterback Chandler Harnish came back to throw to the receivers and helped the scouts throw to the defensive backs.
Harnish headlines a list of NIU football alumns that came back to campus for Pro Day including Da’Ron Brown of the Kansas City Chiefs and Tim Semisch, who spent 2015-16 with the Dolphins before signing with San Diego late in the season, Alex Kube, Landon Cox and Jason Meehan. Members of the 2016 Huskies were also on hand to support their former teammates, as well as members of the coaching staff.
Season tickets are available beginning at just $99 (sections A & G), or just $16.50/game. Tickets in sections B and F of Huskie Stadium and on the East Side General Admission seats are just $122 or $20.33/game, while seating in sections C, D, and E are $132 or $22/game. For NIU Faculty and Staff, members of the NIU alumni Association or the Varsity Club (former letterwinners), season tickets are just $115. NIU opens its 2016 home schedule Saturday, Sept. 17 versus San Diego State.
