Wow ECU fan. At least our fans are only smart enough to come out when we win big. We've been mostly in a 23 year coma and still have done more than ECU will do in the lifetime of most of their fans.

RE: UCF MBB coach Donnie Jones fired
Here's the press release from UCF with comments from AD Danny White and Coach Jones:

http://www.ucfknights.com/sports/m-baskb...16aaa.html

Give credit to Danny White to inform the coach and players on campus late last night before the students left for Spring Break...as way too many weak AD's do some of these firings when no one is there in person.

AD's are generally judged on 2 things:
Hiring of Football Coach
Hiring of a Basketball Coach

No doubt that was one of the reasons why Danny White was interested in the UCF Job besides a nice raise (Football Coaching position was opened at the time of his hiring and the Hoop Coach knew his job was in jeopardy).

Question will be: Will Danny White follow his Dad's AD career (who is already on his 6th AD job) as UCF gave him a perfect platform to make 2 quick hires in just his first 4 months on the job...and even if 1 or both are successful in the short-term, would he bolt to another Univ for a raise/higher profile job?

Answer is probably yes...but one always hope that the program is in a better place when they do move on.

Good that he's gone.

Now just need that clown Lebo fired and Pastner too.

If Memphis wants to pick up the option on Pastner's Hair's contract, I'm ok with that.

Your fans never come out, ECU still had better attendance than you with a 12 win season and third year with a 220+ rpi. Your basketball attendance is the joke

I've got to give credit where it is due, i'm happy and impressed by how quickly and decisively UCF made the move. With the talent already on the UCF roster and Taylor coming back next season a solid coach who is a decent recruiter can have it turned around in 2 - 3 seasons max.

Jones got a show-cause order in 2012 for violations that resulted in sanctions, and then got a contract extension in 2013 through 2017-18.

Now UCF is paying him over the next two seasons to NOT work.

What a cluster.

There is a pecking order. Schools with higher expectations go first. I think UCF was ahead of ECU in football replacement too IIRC.

.

Firing your coach first after an 0-12 season doesn't explain higher expectations...if anything your theory is reversed in football because we fired our coach after a 5-7 season, and UCF let GOL run UCF into the ground at record speed -- all while naming him AD. But I digress....
You don't fire a coach who was back to back conf champs and a Bcs bowl winner who won 30 games in 3 seasons. You do replace a coach after an 0-12 season. and even then UCF didn't fire him, he had enough sense to retire.

GOL was on his last year as head coach, the AD job was Hitt hoping he could keep him on. GOL I expect pretty quickly figured out he really did not want to be AD. When he quit that job he was effectively resigned both jobs, he simply would have preferred finishing the season. Haters can hate GOL, but he was nothing but loyal to UCF. He stayed on 2 years longer than he planned, Because Hitt asked him to.

This. I hope and pray Lebo is next.

Coach Jones buyout is $200,000...approx 1/3 of his yearly salary.

RE: UCF MBB coach Donnie Jones fired
My Question is: Is there a coach that can turn UCF into a perennial power in basketball? I would love to understand basketball better. I get the rules, how the game is played, strategies and such. I just don't understand how this sport develops winners. How can a FGCU, 3 hours from Orlando have a winning tradition and UCF not. I understand different conferences, levels of competition, etc. At the same time, I think FGCU would beat UCF if they played today. How does UCF turn this around. Can anyone out there do this? Please enlighten me.

College basketball is so fickle. UCF is going to have to find another up and coming coach like Donnie was and take a risk. FGCU has a winning tradition in the ASUN. UCF had a winning tradition in the ASUN as well, it is just that when you step into a bigger conference the task of winning gets that much harder. The AAC is a tough basketball conference. Maybe it is not a Big East, but with Memphis, UC, Temple, and UConn as traditional powers along with more recent success in Houston and SMU it is not easy to win.

Basketball recruiting is as dirty as it gets. You have to be able to cross the line to get those certain recruits that will push your program into the next level. UCF does not have the name of a Memphis or UConn so they will always struggle.

UCF fans need to chill and hope for small improvements. Donnie's problem was that he could not even deliver that.

FGCU has a winning tradition.....of 4 years.

In the weakened ASUN, FGCU had 5 straight losing seasons prior to their last 4...which has lead them to winning 2 ASUN Conf Tournaments (last week earlier this week when games were allowed to be played on top seeds home court...and their home court advantaged helped in their OT win vs Stetson).

UCF even had some winning records while in the ASUN (included 4 NCAA Tourn appearances with 4 ASUN Conf Tourn titles when better teams belonged) but it was a big jump up to CUSA...then even bigger jump up to AAC.

Tip: Don't fall into the gutter lead by a crooked Athletic Dept that lead both UCF Basketball AND Football on probation with severe consequences...especially if it occurs right before UCF Hoops is about to joint he Big East (then AAC).

Even if UCF had been at full scholarship levels in hoops over the past 3 years...while it would have helped...it probably wouldn't have been enough to get in the top half of the conf...as this is a very good hoop conf (especially for diehard UCF fans who watched conf ball over the past 20 years0.

Opportunity/talent (in FLA) and now with TV exposure, opportunity is there for someone to win at UCF...but it will take millions of new $$$ to make UCF's program into a perennial Top 3-4 in AAC year in and year out...as the $$$ just haven't been there in the past, as UCF has one of the smallest basketball budgets in AAC.

No small improvements are not the expectation of our university. We have never "known our role" and will continue to push. We have moved conferences every 8 years on average going back to d3. This means an improvement in competition. Every time we move up we have win consistently a few years and then we have to "rebuild". Dj was not a quality coach. Decent recruiter ( which is what he did at fl) but not a good X's and O's guy. We just have to upgrade. Btw this is a top conf for bball

I should care more about basketball but I don't at all, that said, I'd have fired Donnie after the NCAA investigation.

That would have been very expensive...as almost zero quality coaching candidates would have come to UCF knowing that they were going to be on probation for the next 5 years...and with severe recruiting/scholarship sanctions for 3 years...all while "moving up" to play in the AAC.

UCF wasn't going to be good during those probation years...so it was much cheaper to keep DJ than to have to overspend for a Coach who wouldn't normally been a candidate (i.e. no good ones would have applied...whereas now the pool should be pretty good).
