Questions on lodging, Bars and Tailgating
I will be bringing a group of 14-21 (we will see when they actually buy their tickets) from San Diego for the September game.

Suggestions on lodging, good bars and the tailgating process are appreciated.

Additionally if I can answer (70,000' view) any Aztec FB questions, fire away...

Thanks in advance!

If I were you I would make it a long weekend in downtown Chicago and drive out to the game. Its only 65 miles west of Chicago. Come in Thurs. On gameday, depending on kickoff time, drive out, tailgate, then go back and enjoy the city.

RE: Questions on lodging, Bars and Tailgating
The best deal for a large group for a single game if you don't mind spending some money is if you can get the Terrace Club. For the SD St game all of them will sell out quick so if it looks like something you want to do then move on it asap.

http://www.huskieathleticfund.com/premium/football.html

$3000 for 20 people or $1500 for 10 people (the fee is counted as a donation after the expenses = tax write off) These balconey suites have an endzone view and includes food during the game, a cash bar and 1 tailgating spot in the East grass lot (the 2nd best tailgating lot just outside the stadium)

Second option is the endzone club at $100per ticket if you get 10 or more. The cost again is a "donation" minus expenses. No parking pass but GA tickets to the East stands are included. Keep in mind that is the Student side and they stand for the whole game.

If you want to go on the cheap then tailgating in our Arena parking lot is $15 per car and opens 5hr before kickoff. Order tickets thru the NIU ticket office (not Ticketmaster) as it will save you fees and get you better seats. Single game tickets don't go on sale until Aug 1st and will be $25ea.

As far as hotel all I know is that you must stay away from the Travel Inn on Lincoln Hwy. There are 2 decent hotels within walking distance of the stadium if you exclude the Travel Inn mentioned above.

Welcome McQuervo,

You might want to buy tickets from NIU or ticketmaster to get better seats. Visitors are usually in section A. The good news is all seats are good and some are even better! The fans are generally pretty nice. Students generally sit on the east side and alumni and others on the west side.

Tailgating is good, especially if the weather is dry. There is an area called the yard where you can purchase food and drink if you don't bring your own.

Here's a link for last year's game day. I think some west side ticket prices are lower than last year, but not sure.

What is the average age of your group to help with suggestions? As was previously mentioned, downtown Chicago (no car needed) would be my first choice and rent a car for a day and drive out for the game.

Average age of these morons (physical age) 52 (emotional another story). All Men (we do an away game as a group every year no Wives/Girlfriends allowed).

Fact is, most of us are flying into Midway and getting in Friday in time to watch the Cubs. Then driving up north to DeKalb. Stay in DeKalb Friday > Saturday night then back to Chicago for Sports Bars, Cigars, lies and lots of booze. Flying home to SD Monday morning.

Seats we will sit in the corner with all the Aztec fans (might be as many as 3K, happens)....

Bars in DeKalb worth patronizing is my interest....

Thanks again in advance!

Fatty's is a bar right across from the stadium, usually a little more of the grown up crowd, a little nicer than the other bars in my opinion. Great food too, gotta try the cajun potato salad, not too much you can go wrong on the menu

Fatty's is a must. And, you are going to the game the day the Cubs clinch the division! I'm heading down that weekend also. If you are staying Fri/Sat in DeKalb, I would suggest Hampton Inn (DeKalb) or Country Inn or Holiday Inn Express (Sycamore). On a Friday, after a Cubs games you are probably 1:45 from DeKalb which is pretty much straight west.

Sounds like you know what you "want to do."

I would rethink staying in Chicago Friday, if possible, if you are partaking overindulgence of the liquid variety. Last thing you want to do is drive to DeKalb on a Friday in tons of traffic (or sit in it) on a Friday for up to 3 hours. I knows it's pricey in Chicago, but I think you'll enjoy Wrigleyville more. And I am sure you will find you will want to stay there longer than expected. Great place, in small doses when weather is great.

Then Saturday, hit Fatty's post game for games and drinks, Molly's for some eye candy and drinks. Although I am sure you get enough eye candy in SD 12 months a year. Again, driving back into the City can be a pain, especially with cocktails.

Or, as other have said, Th-Su if you haven't booked. You'll want to leave Chicago by then! 03-drunk

Just my 2 cents.

Getting off at Midway, take the orange line to the city for $2.25. If you need a last minute hotel in the city, use the Hotel Tonight App. Also, if you have a big enough group you may want to call the ath dept and they may be able to set something up for tailgating. I think Kansas had a nice setup.

Trying to get out of Chicago on a Friday - unless you can leave the city early (think before 2:30 p.m.) can be a nightmare of traffic. Stay in Chicago on Friday - drive to DeKalb on Sat. Allow plenty of drive time on Sat. - 2 or 2.5 hours at least - to be safe.

...or an accident or whatever. That's why I suggested allowing an extra hour just to be safe. My son lives in the city and has taken almost 2 hours to get to DeKalb over the years for various reasons out of his control.

McQuervo, plenty of room to tailgate in the general parking lot near the Convocation Center if you chose to do that. $15 to park - not a far walk to the stadium at game time. If you do that, on parking maps it is lot C2.

Suggestions on lodging, good bars and the tailgating process are appreciated.

Additionally if I can answer (70,000' view) any Aztec FB questions, fire away...

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response(s)!

Trying to get out of Chicago on a Friday - unless you can leave the city early (think before 2:30 p.m.) can be a nightmare of traffic. Stay in Chicago on Friday - drive to DeKalb on Sat. Allow plenty of drive time on Sat. - 2 or 2.5 hours at least - to be safe.

i live in the city and on a saturday, unless there is big construction, we make it to dekalb in an hour.

ANYTHING is better than leaving the city on a Friday afternoon from Wrigley. Especially if not from around here.03-nutkick

Take a close look at taking the Red Line (RF Corner) to Metra. It'll remove you from behind the wheel and traffic.

Get on the Metra then what? It only goes to Elburn.

McQuervo I agree with everyone else, stay in the city Friday night and drive out Saturday late morning. The game will no doubt be a 6pm ct kickoff so tailgating starts at 1pm ct.

For now, did we ever hear if that Metra rumor of extending it to Dekalb had any substance to it or was that just hearsay?

RE: Questions on lodging, Bars and Tailgating
If our group is staying overnight in DeKalb we always stay at the Baymont which is perfectly located right next to Fatty's and across the street and down a bit from Pizza Pro's (another good bar/restaurant for post game drinks/food). Since it'll be warm out you have the option of a short walk to Molly's or Pizza Villa or the ambitious walk (which we've been known to do) to downtown DeKalb where there are a few more bars/restaurants (O'Leary's, Eduardo's, Lord Stanley's, etc.) If you are looking to stay close to the stadium and campus then the Baymont is a great option.

The key is taking the Red Line AWAY from Wrigleyville - to a cab (to Hotel), a remote Parking Area, Elburn . Driving from Wrigley Field on a Friday is going to suck, particularly if you've REALLY enjoyed the game. Combining Red Line and Metra can get to any number of areas containing Hotel's (towards Aurora (88), towards Geneva (38), etc...).

Train to DeKalb - That one is dead on the vine. Driving to Elburn is just fine by me.
