With the job Chris Beard did this year, they should rename the coach of the year award after him. I challenge you to find a coach who could turn a team with the little returning talent they had, and turn it into a league champion.

Conference office must have read his piece on being ready to leave the belt and decided to punish the players for it.

Long, Brown, and (especially) Beard were probably givens. Not looking forward to three more years of Brown.

And say what you will, it is a little surprising to see no Panthers anywhere. Not that anyone was a slam dunk (heh), but it does shed some light on what it can do to player perception when a team drops from the top to the middle of the conference.

RE: Men's Basketball All Conference Honors
I didn't expect anyone from Georgia State on the list. Hollowell was the only one who really put up all conference type numbers, but even his year was considered a disappointment by most metrics.

Complicated situation. Take Devin Carter at Arkansas State for example. He averaged 19 points a game this season, which is up near the top of the league, but he struggled to get into the 3rd team because he played on a largely disappointing team.

It is good bulletin board material for the locker room, but if you are not 1st or 2nd team, it might as well be honorable mention. And with our disappointing season, it means the players were disappointing as well. Not surprised we didn't have anyone.

Absolute mockery of GSU to not have one player on the list. I should've known better.

Can we do something about General/Interdisciplinary Studies? Say English, History, Geography, Sports Management, something.

I'm actually okay with this. I agree that the prevalence among athletes looks funny, but so much of the value of a degree in life opportunities is just about finishing in something. I'd like to think that they're being properly advised in making this choice (e.g. if Shawn Long's fallback is pharmacy school, he better have some science minors in there).

It's a very common degree among athletes. For many of these kids they are only in College because of basketball, they've never really thought of specializing in one area because to them basketball is that area.

I think our entire team majors in General or Interdisciplinary studies.

I'm not a big fan of it for athletes just because it implies there is no structure or accountability - not saying it is true - but that's what it says to me. Perhaps it is better than some of the other majors that seem to attract athletes (exercise science, sports management) and I've seen criticized. But I feel if you are in a major then there is more accountability for the student and department. I've also heard some schools offer "life experience" for interdisciplinary degrees which seems shady.

We did have a football player though that was an Interdisciplinary Studies major, Josh Hoke. Kid was a great student and wanted a major we didn't offer, journalism I believe, so he used Interdisciplinary Studies to create his own. I had a buddy who wanted more of a web design degree so cobbled together one from graphic design and computer science classes. I think those cases are fine.

That's the degree path these athletes are enrolled into. That degree has been offered by many universities for a long time now.

What's wrong with General Studies exactly? My fiancee graduated in General Studies and she got a great job with an oilfield company making more money than many of her peers who graduated with the degrees you mentioned. For many employers who wish to mold young, entry-level employees, they mainly want to just see that you actually graduated and graduated in a timely manner.

exactly.

And not only that, I'd be willing to bet if we took a poll, that quite a bit of people on this forum aren't in a field directly relating to the degree they got anyway.

In most business type jobs (sales, marketing, etc), employers don't care what degree you have, as long as you have one.

From what I've seen, the past decade or so, many of the football players with that degree go into HS coaching while also having to teach a particular curriculum class. There are quite a few former TXST players coaching the HS ranks these days. We also have 6/7 that have opened fitness/training gyms that are doing well.

Who should not be on the lust and which Georgia Stare player should replace him?

UTA landed 1 on a team that was third and won almost 2/3rds of its conference games. They should have had more. However, it is my belief those on the list are worthy.

I would submit Bilbao for a spot on one of those rosters or at least a mention of some kind. he is a pretty solid player in this conference.

Bilbao didn't show up for either game against the Cajuns. I'd have Jalen Jones on the team if I was going to put another UTA player on.

See that the thing about UTA. Jones didn't do as well against other teams. Bilbao, Jones and Charles are all legitimate players and contribute mightily to the Maverick's success. Give me enough of those guys who play as a team and I will show you a winner, even if they aren't stars.
