Steve Forbes on ESPN 2...
ETSU down to Matt McCall & Chattanooga in the SoCon Final.

Down 5 with just under 7 min left...

Watched the whole game so far...nothing ETSU does stands out to me.

His first season as a head coach, right? And he has his team in the conference title game. And, he beat Georgia Tech on the road, for one of the biggest wins in school history.

Maybe he can do better in his second season. 04-cheers

RE: Steve Forbes on ESPN 2...
UTC has more talent than ETSU. While ETSU's cupboards weren't bare, McCall inherited much more talent than Forbes did. I think this is the first year Forbes has ever recruited for himself outside of community college. So time will tell. I'm not sure if McCall has ever recruited for himself?

Size may impact why they like the 3.

While I think Forbes is an excellent bench coach, tech not withstanding, I don't know about recruiting for himself?

McCall, maybe Pastner 2.0, right place right time.

who knows, but neither guy is going to make the Memphis come out and see the sights

I'm fairly impressed with what Forbes has done this year but, if we are going low-rent for our next hire, would much rather have a Larry Eustachy or Jerod Haase.

I watched ETSU in person once this season and was not impressed.

I also watched UTC in person and was way more impressed. Coach was young but clearly had the respect of his players.

His player got fouled on a 3 - pretty obvious, right in front of the ref/ETSU bench. No call...

Player overreacted and got a T, then Forbes followed the ref out to half court and got a T himself.

4 point game turned into 8 and that's was all she wrote.

Not a fair comparison. UTC inherited a talented and veteran squad while Forbes is in a rebuilding mode.

Moot point because I'm convinced Pastner is going nowhere this year.

RE: Steve Forbes on ESPN 2...
Forbes took over a rather depleted ETSU roster and injected high level talent right away. I watched them hang with UT in a rather full Thompson Bowling Arena with much less talent than the Vols had.

ETSU didn't play great defense last night, and UTC had a clear size and physicality edge on them. UTC has basically won three games against the Bucs at the FT line; they are +31 or so from the stripe over the three games they played against one another this season.

However, Forbes' team was within 3 or 4 with 4 minutes left to go, had the ball and were finally playing well on D when the refs missed a very clear foul call on a Bucs 3 pt attempt. Forbes and a Buc player got T'd up after the no call and the game was in the books.

UTC and ETSU are both extremely old teams, UTC will only lose one starter from this year's team (5 seniors overall), and will have 5 juniors return next season. UTC only has one underclassman on the roster this season.

ETSU loses 2 starters (4 seniors total) including Gelawn Guyn, Forbes' leader and best player by far. He'll have 6 juniors returning, and only has two underclassmen (one of which is a starter). Forbes essentially went with a 4 guard lineup this entire season, which likely accounted for the rebounding and foul woes against teams like UTC. I don't know how much of this is roster restrictions and how much is Forbes' overall scheme, perhaps someone like Keith can enlighten us.

Forbes has a very veteran squad as well, plus two high major talents in Duece Bello and Peter Jurkin.

It certainly wasn't a "good T" based on how the game was going, but I can't say that I'd blame Forbes or that many coaches would do it different. ETSU was surging and that foul happened directly in front of the ref. The ball didn't even make it 3/4th of the way to the rim on the shot. Then, the ref compounded his own error by calling a tech on the shooter when he raised an objection. At that point the ref has blown an important call and then doubled down on his own error by calling ETSU for a tech; a possible swing of 7 or 8 points.

It was a horrible way for the game to end; before that it was shaping up to be a really good one.

To judge Forbes or anyone else by one game is beyond hilarious.

RE: Steve Forbes on ESPN 2...
What I found interesting was when Forbes called a TO after ETSU made a 3 point shot to pull within 1 point. UTC then came out of that TO and hit a 3 of their own. JP did the same thing about a week ago. Both times momentum was stopped. There must be a book on such things that says call a TO at that point.
