Not the Sun Belt but still a championship for App. It would be nice to have this as a SB sport. I know that is wishful thinking and not happening, but I can dream.

Kidding Appsters, that's pretty cool. Figures you're good a wrastlin'.
App has some good history in the sport, but UTC has dominated the SoCon in wrestling for a good many years. When we beat them earlier in the year it was their first conference lose in 4 years I think. This may have been the first time in 6 years UTC did not win the tourney. App was often 2nd place with a few exceptions.
And a few of the moves were not far off from your clip. :-)
Wrestling is a dying sport in high school and college. I had hopes of App dropping it several years back. Why? Only 7 of the 26 D1 conferences have wrestling and most of those grab schools far and wide to have enough schools for a championship. The Big Ten is the only DI conference where every school participates. Only 6 ACC, 6 MAC, 6 Ivy League, 4 Big12, 3 SoCon, 3 PAC 12, 3 MW, 2 MVC,1 SEC, 1 CUSA, 1 SB, 1 Big Sky schools have wrestling teams.

Many many years ago the Cajuns actually had one of the better wresting programs in the country.....................not really. We did try it as a club sport and had some success back in the mid 60's but it went by the wayside like a number of other non-revenue sports.
We actually won seven weight lifting national championship between 1963 and 1971. We also had one of the top trampolining teams in the country (coach was the national team coach) with 26 world champions.

My other alma mater is Iowa. When I was in residency there I went many times to the wrestling matches and they were a lot of fun. While I was there, the basketball team wasn't very good and the wrestling team won the national championship 3 years in a row, so there would be larger crowds at the wrestling matches. Regarding it being a dying sport, within the last 10 years, Arkansas high schools have developed wrestling programs.

I am not sure how far the numbers can drop and it stay NCAA sanctioned. After that it could be like rodeo or sailing is or maybe snow skiing also. Those are collegiate sports but outside of NCAA.
Wrestling goes back so long that even the Olympics changed their mind about some of the wrestling being dropped.
I say we stay around until the bitter end. If we get down to 10 schools offering wrestling then we will always be a top 10 program. :-)

With MMA it has gained popularity with some of the younger folk again. A Lot of programs died due to Title IX.

Yes it is. I wish it were not. I wrestled in high school winning the State Championship 3 years in a row in the heavyweight div. I had some offers from colleges up north and west but my SAT scores would not have allowed me to go to any of them, plus I wanted to play football anyway. I can say that wrestling helped me a ton in playing football, especially being a nose tackle. Its a great sport, and there is nothing more tiring and demanding than wrestling. I always wished GS had a wrestling program but that will never happen. Congratulations to App on their Conf champion.
