Interesting article from our (Coach Cal) Coaching search Feb 2, 2000 & March 12, 2000
http://www.memphisflyer.com/backissues/i...cvr571.htm

"It was tabloid journalism at its worst. And that is just one indication of the depth of interest in the Memphis head coaching job. Add a charismatic coach who is well known, especially in the Northeast, and the story takes on national significance.

Channel 5 is not the only one to make mistakes on the story. Sports Illustrated reported earlier this month that the U of M had offered Calipari a five-year deal at $900,000 per year. The magazine said the coach had been given a deadline of February 1st to accept the offer.

Johnson denies the story. Not only has Calipari not been given a deadline, he hasn’t even been offered the job.

“All the coaches say they will talk to you about it, as long as you keep it quiet,” says Johnson, who maintains he has not discussed potential candidates with anyone in the media. “But then, for whatever reason, it always comes out.”

John Calipari is the biggest coaching name available. He was fired last season by the New Jersey Nets after his team started the lockout-shortened season 3-17. His record over a little more than two years at New Jersey was less than stellar, 72-112."

http://umasshoops.com/history/alumni/joh...112000.htm

"Calipari coached his final game as an assistant for the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night against the Knicks. U of M athletic director R. C. Johnson and his wife, Melba, flew to Philadelphia early Saturday to pick up the Calipari family, with the private jet landing in Memphis around 1:30 p.m.

The family arrived at The Pyramid around 2:40 p.m., and met with U of M players Marcus Moody, Shamel Jones and Paris London in the Tiger locker room. Calipari's family left the locker room for the press room while he stayed behind to sign his contract.

The five-year deal is worth a total financial package of $550,000 annually, with a buyout clause of $550,000 in effect for the first three years. Incentives built into the contract can make it worth $930,000 annually, and Calipari can receive revenue from camps run using university facilities.

Private donors will cover the incentives, which include things like having the best conference record ($10,000), national coach of the year award ($25,000), an NCAA Tournament bid ($20,000), a trip to the Final Four ($100,000)."

A few points to take away from these articles;

Memphis job was and is a great gig for coaches wanting to go for the top.

Don't believe these media reports of this is a done deal that Pastner is staying; in fact take with a grain of salt.

Sometimes you can get a great coach for a lot less that you expect to pay. Depends on their situation. Cal could have tripled that salary. The incentives were unreachable for years.

Empty seats are a great motivation for the administration to change things.

Also remember Pastner 10.6 million already in budget and in reality boosters probably wouldn't have to come up between 500,000 and 1million per year for new coach..

I keep saying that money is NOT the reason THEY or should I say HE wants to keep him. And no it has nothing to do with the big 12 either. I'll do like tug now and type in riddles so the thread won't get deleted

I reasonlbly certain HE doesn't carry enough weight to make this decision by himself. Too many ticked off major boosters. And I think it's only about 30% probability that Josh stays-barring an improbable miracle run to S16 or better in NCAA tourney- not just winning AAC.

I just want to see my tigers be in contention again. In my nearly 40 years on earth and watching the tigers we have nearly always been in the conversation. JP insulting our past to justify a lousy present that he has built shows, in my opinion, how dispicable of a person he is.
