There's already a report out there saying Lovie Smith will be the next head coach.

Twitter is all over this. If so, I'm glad they ended our suspense quickly.

Sounds like PJ inherited a gold mine when he arrived at WMU. The truth will set you free!

Got to be a punch in the stomach to Bill - I'm sure he was up to the challenge of proving himself in 2016 and gaining the confidence of the administration, eventually retiring at UI. Although Sr. and Jr. made out like bandits with the buyouts which will help soothe the pain. Promoting Ryan to OC was a wise investment, so to speak.

RE: Cubit Fired...that didnt take long(Fleck a candidate)
I fully understand the AD's perspective. I think it speaks volumes about the previous lack of commitment by the Admin, the facilities and just how desperate things are at U of I.
Ron Guenther who had been the long standing AD prior to Thomas who was just canned was good but got lazy. U of I never was fully invested in football. Never has. But when they settled for Ron Zook it put them on a glide path that brought them to this spot. IMO it has no reflection on Cubit. He as handed a bag of manure. At his stage of career a bag of manure he was glad to take. The problem was that U of I was so inept culturally and systemically that at some point you have to surgically remove good flesh ahead of the rotting flesh to save the body.
Likely will go to their Zeigler and whomever and pitch a revamp. Time to pony up. Need to change now before the fish rots more.
There is a very good college football coach available for another program. Not this year obviously but next year. At WMU he didn't have a secretary let alone a money man. I understand there were and are differences in perspective and culture. That's called life.
Someone mentioned, rightly or wrongly, that Fleck has proved he can recruit MAC level talent but hasn't proven that he could B10. What are you smoking?
Those that will play at the top tier D1 schools don't even consider a directional school unless to transfer or a 5th year. Fleck does an outstanding job recruiting those kids who see themselves in Ann Arbor, Madison and EL but the POV isn't mutual. But with likely the best MAC or FSB facilities and his Uber personality he is able to get those kids who don't want to play at Rutgers, UConn or Kentucky. Those programs might be P5 but they are fodder for their brethren. To play immediately and practice at WMU facilities with the Jim Rome's bud cant be replicated in Lexington, Storrs or Piscataway. And those kids are good. Just not good enough to Roll Tide or Hook em Horns.
Cubit will land on his feet even if some don't care.

Any chance BC just takes the money, calls it a career and retires? Or do you think we'll see him emerge somewhere?

What, is he 63? That's young. I know some here find that inconceivable. But before they know it they'll resemble that statement.

Doubt he'll retire but I could see him in a "retirement job" as OC (HC?) at one of the smaller programs in Florida.

Obviously the question isn't whether he "can" work past 63, but if he wants to.
