These 3 tweets from OU beat writer-

Quote:Saul Phillips went all in on the Jaaron Simmons should've been 1st Team All-MAC thing tonight.

Quote:"If you didn't vote Simmons 1st team "Then you didn't see us play enough. No way he is not first team. No. No. No. No. No."

Quote:"Tony, are you MAC MVP without Jaaron?" "No." "If he's not (1st team) then we shouldn't have it." -- More Phillips

I'll leave this here. Dambrot compared Big Dog to Shaq and said that he thinks he can be one of the top bigs in the entire country next season. I think Dambrot's knows talent when he sees it.

EVERYBODY'S best player will be one of the best in the country next year per their head coach. Who is the last Akron player in the NBA, cuz that's where the best bigs end up. And anyone comparing Johnson to O'Neil, except in a "it's not really close" manner, is dealing in hyperbole. He's a very good MAC player.

I don't necessarily think Big Dog will be one of the best C next year, but I do feel it is telling that Dambrot went out of his way to emphasize how good he thinks Big Dog is when he wasnt put in a spot to have to. From my previous experience he is a pretty candid person in interviews and doesn't sugar coat things too often.

RE: Post-Season Awards
The guy I thought got robbed in the awards was Tucker Haymond. Going back to 2006, every player who got more than 13.5 points per game made one of the lists, at least Honorable Mention. He's 8th in scoring in the MAC at 15.9 ppg and nothing?

RE: Post-Season Awards
This is an interesting discussion. IMO, Big Dog Johnson is the best player in the league, but is flawed. His flaw is that he is still overweight and he wears down. Akron was easily the best team in this league UNTIL Forsythe got injured. Until then, Akron could keep an excellent center on the court for 40 minutes, and Johnson could go all out while he was on the court. The Zips stumbled when Forsythe went down and they either had to play a lot of minutes without a true center or play minutes with a tired Johnson on the court.

Akron is a team of three point shooters and two excellent offensive threats at center. Most teams have to double down on them to stop them, but Johnson in particular is a heady player and is excellent at finding the open man when you double down on him. He is a big reason that the shooters get so many open looks.

The reason Dambrot starts Cheatham at center is to try to save Johnson for the more important minutes. He knows that he cannot beat the better teams without a fresh Johnson on the court. The question would be is a guy who is the best player in the league for 20 minutes but not as good for the next 10 minutes and just average beyond 30 minutes the POY, or even a first teamer. Since his efforts led to a first place finish in the league, and there was no one else who was more dominant, and since I thought that head to head Johnson was better than OU's excellent center, I think he would have been my choice for POY. In this case I though a guy who could only give you 20-25 strong minutes was more valueable than the guys who played 35 minutes of quality play. Usually I would go the other way, but in this case I just think he made all the difference for the best team in the league.

Yet Toledo easily handled Akron, and Boothe, our only true center, got Forsythe in early foul trouble and put up big numbers against Johnson and whoever else they threw at him. Johnson is a better passer than Campbell, worse than Boothe, while Campbell is the better three point shooter. I rank them Boothe (1), Campbell (1a), Johnson (2). I will acknowledge some Boothe bias as relates to Campbell but I see a clear separation between Boothe/ Campbell and Johnson. Johnson's game is simply more limited.
