Not much use of having a Coach of the Year then. Odds are the COTY is not the coach of the championship team, however odds are he is far more likely to win the award than anyone else.
And I'd agree w/ the selected part of your post. The entire conference is populated w/ like sized(approx.) and funded schools, so the winning program and coach seems to me to be the top for said yr. NO? Or are we just going down the who(m?) ever does better than the so called "experts" said would/could happen? Winning the prize is the goal imho, period. If they want to come up w/ a different award for "surprise team" etc. than do that, but the team that wins any conf. championship should imho have that coach more times than not get that award. I get that a crazy, unexpected/awesome finish type of thing could change once in a great while but it should be just that: not an every yr. team that won a few more games than were expected type of thing imho.

Coach's contract usually include bonus for COY, right?

Hasse deserves COY, his team was one of the preseason favorites along with ODU. Even though UAB was the hunted, they won the conference by 2 games. Impressive

He's good. UAB was smart to double down on his salary last year, that should keep him around for a while. Here's a link to his contract, he'll get bonuses for conf title, NIT or NCAA bids and coach of the year should he win it and I'll say he's earned it.
Edit: Duh...here's the link

RE: Predicting CUSA basketball's award winners
I also think it is Haase for Coach of the Year.
d'Antoni is certainly in the discussion, because he did more with less. But the lower-case "d" in his name is not a typo.
Marshall, with its incredible offensive potency, is responsible for more fan heart attacks this season than any other CUSA team. But it lacks a capital "D" Defense. I believe that will prove the undoing of the Herd in either the quarterfinal or semifinal match ups.
(On the other side of that coin, oDU has struggled most of this season with its own capitalization problem. But no one is suggesting Jeff Jones for COY this year.)

Of course he does. He's the leading scorer in C-USA and has been a consistent force in the conference the past 2 years. Remember last year how there was talk of Freeman getting POY then? Dude is averaging over 25 ppg in conference play, with a stretch of games that went 24-28-28-28-37-28-25-38.
Whether he wins it or not is up for debate, and Hamilton is a fantastic player. But to say it's all wrapped up for him I think is at least a bit premature.

RE: Predicting CUSA basketball's award winners
Our beat writer has already shared some of his votes:
Quote:...I do worry for UAB about individual stats knocking guys down a rung. If Robert Brown played for FAU, he'd probably score 20 a game. But UAB didn't always need him to. I put him on my first team, voted Alex Hamilton for POY, Dirk Williams for 6th, Kelly for newcomer and Lee for Defensive player of the year. Media didn't vote for coach of year...

With only one good leg.
I missed that he broke it. If anyone has the actual numbers please share.
He broke the record on 2/25 against UTSA and Jeremy Combs also broke the record:
"Charlotte's Joseph Uchebo and Jeremy Combs of North Texas each passed former All-American Kenyon Martin on the rebounding chart for conference games in just 15 contests. Martin pulled down 186 boards in 16 games during the 1999-2000 season. Uchebo now has 201 rebounds against conference foes, while Combs has tallied 187."
Uchebo is now up to 4th all time for total season rebounds with at least one game left to play:
http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/conf...eason.html
The all time leader, Josh Davis, did it in 35 games. Joe has played 31. If he gets 4 more games, I feel confident Joe will shatter that record.
He still has a decent shot of setting the all time mark which is amazing given his knees and how Coach Price intentionally limited his minutes early in the season.

Only coaches vote for COTY. I think they will see what a great job D'Antoni has done with the Herd.

We have two or three equally deserving candidates for POY.

If your posting name was Dawgxas, we'd have assumed otherwise. Other La. Tech. posters get the benefit of the doubt.

RE: Predicting CUSA basketball's award winners
I'm with the general consensus that any of the following are worthy of winning the POY award (listed alphabetically):
Freeman
Hamilton
Kelly
I would not be upset if it goes to any of the three as they each performed well enough to win. If I could vote I would cast it for Freeman. Leading the conference in scoring on one of the lowest scoring teams along with playing strong defensively on a strictly man-to-man team that was among the league leaders in team defense indicates that he performed well at both ends.
For coach of the year I could see it going to any of the following (probably misspelled all of them):
D'Antony
Hasse
LA Tech coach (Konkel? - don't remember his name)
Of the three I would probably favor Hasse for keeping UAB on top throughout the year with the target on their backs, and the LA Tech coach for getting the team tied for 3rd after having the graduation losses along with the two season ending injuries. Would probably place them in that order UAB, LA Tech, Marshall.

I would love to see Alex Hamilton get the POY. He has played behind one of the most talented bunch of players Tech has had and this was his one year to show the world that he was just as good.
