The ratings for that Big Ten title game between North Dakota State and West Texas A&M would make the last episode of MASH look like a Fox Sports 2 event

I think inviting an FCS school (or lower) would be too much of an image hit to the MWC. I think they would try for UTEP first, maybe with another Texas school so they wouldn't be leaving the other Texas schools behind in C-USA for none in the MWC. I think Texas State would be an easy target with upside in that they are the only football playing member of the Sun Belt so they don't have any reluctance to move on from the conference and provides a step into Texas for the MWC.

Bingo. The other Texas G5 schools all have a conference-mate (UH/SMU in AAC and UTEP/Rice/UTSA/UNT in CUSA). We were the odd man out when the musical chairs game stopped.

The Sun Belt continues to focus on the east and the southeast for its future. New members include Georgia Southern, App State, Coastal Carolina, and rumors of another eastern school in Kentucky, Tennessee, or Alabama. New Mexico State is not being offered a full invite (despite court and diamond sports being where they thrive) much to the disappointment of Texas State, Arkansas State, and the Cajuns.

The Bowl games are also focused on eastern locations (Orlando, Montgomery, Mobile, potential-South Carolina) with New Orleans being the lone exception. Two years ago, the league selected South Alabama for the Montgomery Bowl (despite Texas State having a better record) and Arkansas State for the Mobile bowl (same record, with TXST holding h2h) because of "geography reasons".

MWC would get a foothold in Central Texas (inside the Austin/San Antonio corridor) and 3 hours from Dallas and Houston.

Question for UTEP folks: Out of curiosity, which metro area in Texas has the largest population of UTEP alumni? We often hear "UTEP wants to be connected to other schools in Texas", and for that, you would think, it makes a big difference in which part of Texas their alums are most concentrated.

UTEP always turned out well to games at SMU

My bad, I overlooked Texas State but I could certainly see the MWC offering an invitation to the Bobcats if UTEP elected to stay with CUSA. The MWC is on record saying it would like to expand back into Texas, and the long term upside potential is higher for Texas State than for NMSU, Montana or UC Davis IMHO.

UTEP to me seems so out of place in C-USA. Get them in the MWC

One has to wonder what line of bull CSU had to use to get the money to build the stadium. $246 million...yeesh. They have to be going somewhere with that...

The same line that keeps CU going. But, what does matter? CSU is a state public college and has $$ from the state. I guess people tend forget that CSU isn't a regional school like most of the G5 where they get quite a few dollars from there stated funds.

As for who would replace them, its obvious that NMSU would take fill in that mountain spot. UTEP isn't leaving CUSA.

I doubt it, they already have Colorado. Expansion is all about TV sets.

The only Western add I can see for B12 is BYU.

I agree this round if it is only 12. There has been 0 hint of 14.

You'll get no dispute from me on CSU's academic/institutional muscle. And, iirc, there's a lot of projects going on there. It's how the school fell well/miserably short of its donor goal and STILL grabbed for the top-shelf option with the venue. To me, I don't know how that happens unless there's something the school is holding onto.

If any part of realignment is about proof through funding resources, as in, the ability for a school to build with alternative funding sources, CSU swung and missed. Might not matter, but people should care where there money goes, and a football stadium is just ridiculous when the school can't do more itself.

As for a replacement? Rice. Tulsa won't budge until there's more regional fare for them. If Rice moves elsewhere and not to the MWC, UTEP rejoins the gang.
