RE: Darell Bowie
When healthy and in his right mind Bowie was the only talent on NIU's roster in the last 10 years that really concerned me as a fan of a MAC competitor.

Raw in many ways, particularly re BB IQ, but physically a threat to dominate inside on both ends. He never seemed to get traction with the staff likely shooting himself in the foot with poor decision making (I saw that in spades in person) but always felt if he could be harnessed that physically he could be a difference maker.

The type of kid/talent you must recruit at this level but it cuts both ways. Usually feast or famine. Unfortunately for the Huskie faithful it has been famine.

Bowie and the NIU coaching staff worked well together. He was injured. He was Monty's top 2-players while he played. He's leaving because there is no scholly next year for him, not because he is unhappy at NIU.

RE: Darell Bowie
Currently, he is still a part of the team and attends each game and sits on the bench.

I understand his current physical limitations and that he has a history. But from my perspective having played and coached I make my observation.

If the staff wanted to they could make room for him. And I understand perfectly well why they or anyone else wouldn't. Not a knock on Darrel as a person or the Staff's ability to assess talent and coach it up. Stuff happens. It's called life.

But I still feel that he was a significant physical talent that as one with experience felt he could tilt the game and frankly ... significantly. Not because he's moving onto the next level but because the MAC as a whole doesn't have a lot of physically gifted and skilled raw athletes with high BB IQ. A lot of those physical talents but nothing upstairs or great future coaches or business leaders but get undressed by superior athletes.

The reason Akron has been so successful for so long is Dambrodt takes the risk, has the will and some leverage (LeBron) to forcefully shape a kid's trajectory. No one wants to be on the Kings Poop list and everyone wants to make their mark. Either you get dropped and replaced like the PG who did weed 2-3 years ago or you grow up and play at a consistent level above the rest of the league. The evidence is clear.

Bowie was scheduled to be one of three seniors this year. Monty recruited three freshman to replace them. Monty did not plan on Bowie being out and red shirting this year. They thought Bowie would be playing this year. There isn't a scholly open and they have no one they would ask to leave. They could not make a spot for him unless he paid his own way. Only 13-guys allowed on scholly at a time and that includes red shirting.

“Me and Abdel are really cool,” Bowie said. “We keep in touch with each other. When he was here my freshman year I moved out my dorm room into his crib actually. I'm proud of him and it helps a lot especially having a coach and guys to feel comfortable around.”

Bowie and Nader can party on forever. We all know when Nader decides to party.

I understand the process. But if Monty wanted him back and DB was inclined they would make it work. But that's water under the bridge.

Scholarships are 1 year gigs. You earn it you keep it. What coach would not want to keep the best who have earned it?

To make it work someone loses their scholarship, transferring or going to walk on status. It happens all the time. But I understand that Bowie is a health risk, 1 year left and it's time to move on.

RE: Darell Bowie
Sorry wrong answer! There is not one player on the team that NIU would take their scholarship away. They would not take it away from any of the five freshman. They would not take it away from any of the three incoming freshman. They would not take it away from Highsmith, Zelis, Orris, Maric or Armstead. Baseline, you are trying to say they didn't want Bowie and that's just wrong! They expected him to play this year and be one of three departing seniors. That is why they recruited three incoming freshman.

Yeah, it's just an unfortunate timing situation. I think Monty is handling it the proper way, we had committed to everyone else, great that Bowie gets an extra year, but not something we expected, and he'll easily be able to find another program to play at.

Does it hurt us a bit for next season? Probably.

Does it better help the program after next season? Probably.

It is really interesting how this has become the collegiate version of free agency.

Just hold tight until Bowie announces another school and let's let this year end. This board has been scattered with thoughts that someone like Porter had been unhappy with playing time at one point of the season. There is always the possibility that someone on the current roster doesn't come back and there becomes a scholarship available. It's happened quite a bit in the recent past and there is still some time left.

That could happen but I don't see it happening. A guy like Porter complaining about playing time is just immaturity. He is not going anywhere. He knows he is the starting pg next year. He seems to be playing the way Monty wants him to play and the team needs him to play.
