OT: Schorling's Closes.
Hated reading that Schorling's had closed after its long run. Ace, Franklin's, and Schorlings were a part of the UT experience for many that lived on campus and the surrounding area. Friday afternoons usually featured a long checkout line with UT students buying munchies, cigarettes, and beer for the weekend. If you were a regular the staff would know your name. Schorling's attempted to expand by purchasing the tract of land University Hills Apartment was to be built upon and building a Super Schorlings, but the deal was blocked. They might still be around had that happened .Thanks to everybody there for great service and quality products for many years.

Boy, you nailed it with those three. My daughter lives near campus and I still stopped at Schorling's to get odds and ends. Cashed a ton of checks at Ace- they were like a bank to me. Those three places. And The Bell were pretty much the only places I spent money my freshman year. Sad to hear the last one is gone. A lot of Old Orchard folks refused to shop elsewhere even though Schorling's was limited in variety.

Story on TV last night said that the owners had been trying to sell it for a year or so, but nothing has materialized. The owners say the store is still profitable, but they are in their 70's now, and don't feel like doing it anymore.

I will particularly miss the Schorlings meat department which was so great for those special holiday occasions such as Thanksgiving (turkey), Christmas (rib roast) and St. Pat's (corned beef). Years ago they also had the best thick cut bacon to be found anywhere, although I think that as prices began to creep up in recent years, they may have backed off to a slight cheaper product to keep the price competitive.
Time marches on and things change.....but not always for the better.

Meat and produce were good. Always thought it was better than Krogers.

Time for a fan-owned grocery. Could call it Rocket Meats.
