If NIU was in the same position in 2010, located in Chicago or along the Tri-State I think NIU would be top consideration for B12 and many talks would have occurred. As well as NIU stadium plans would be here and NIU would have 2x+ the crowd and many times more the fan base. May have already been in another conference, "maybe" even B12.

Unfortunately, it's not.

BTW, do cable providers in DeKalb County still provide both Chicago and Rockford network feeds?

Just curious.

My only thought about this is the Illness... now yeah, the Illness (along with Northwestern and UofC) was a founding member of the B1G... For just about all of our lives, the Illness have been considered the STATE's team, with Chicago's team being Notre Dame more than Northwestern (NU only being Chicago's team when they're winning haha). It takes 28 minutes less to get from NIU to Chicago than ND to Chicago... It takes 1hr less to get from NIU to Chicago than the Illness to Chicago. I think NIU only being a solid hour (50 if you gun it) from Chicago, 2 hours from Milwaukee, 1hr 50 from Madison, 2.5 from iowa city (4.5 from Ames, which is actually kinda bad in comparison) is a solid lil spot to say we could have some sort of marketing in the city. I grew up and spent just about every maturing moment of my life in Chicago, and guess what, I had never seen any Illness advertisement. Only reason I knew or cared who they were is cause of Alum who went there. In the past couple years, I've actually seen more NIU advertisement in the city than NU and Illness combined (of course I'm keeping in mind that neither of those two need to advertise), which is a step forward. NIU doesn't have/own the Chicago market, but I know damn well that if Big XII decided they wanted to dip into the market via NIU, it would be SEEN. Imagine Texas or Oklahoma playing a huge game vs NU or the Illness at Soldier Field. If using NIU as a stepping stone to make that more of a reality, then I'm all for it.

Why would anyone in Madison, Milwaukee care an iota of NIU? Did you ever hear of a school nicknamed the Badgers there? And AMES would be the closest rival by far.

Illinois used to advertise here. Purdue too. But when you suck the cost of advertising is greater than any potential.

I am sure Oklahoma and Texas fans would be exited about DeKalb. Because hey, it's Chicago. It's not. Schaumburg isn't. Oak Brook isn't. Naperville isn't It has no appeal and lost revenue when they average 90-100k.Maybe a huge casino, about 20 more hotels and 50 more restaurants and bars and a mega mall and people may want to go to DeKalb and stay the night more than once. I don't think they are going to stay for Fatty's potato salad, a gyro from Tom And Jerry's or to ride the rail at Molly's like many of us did and do. and we are looking at 40k stadium? They would want to bring 10, 20k.

And as always, you can't invite yourself. I don't think anyone is saying turn down an invite. It just isn't reality. If it happens, I will be more than happy to sell my Bear PSLs and fork up the dough at NIU. That's a thought . Appeal to Bear fans! lol

So we should roofie the B12 like Rutgers did to the B1G?

Yep never underestimate the power of television markets and the cash it involves. Money is a very powerful thing

1 billion dollar endowment, 48,000 undergrads (19,000 grads), a market 3x the size of Chicago, only D1 football team within about 100 miles of NYC, only P5 team IN 200 miles probably, roughly 200 miles from 2 other conference teams.

I would say they had a little more upside then NIU.

But I will say they were a build it they will come, to an extent. Got good, had 40k consistently mid to late 2000's, before investing a lot in their stadium 100mil and expanding to 52k. Then they moved up to the big leagues.

The Big East got a little better, they got better. They WERE 10-15 years ago where NIU WANTS to be. Again, take a chance building it,take a step up a class (ANYWHERE other than Sunbelt is better) prove yourself. Problem is NCAA football conference dynamics both conference and playoffs are constantly changing and will in 5 yrs. NIU needs to align with anything other than MAC sorry to say, if they want to step up.

As mentioned before, I thing 2 BCS appearances in a row would have done wonders. A win in the 2nd and this stadium is being built now.

I think moving out of the MAC would ultimately weaken NIUs position
I think you're absolutely delusional when it comes to realignment

What all the financial/TV market experts here can never answer is... if this is such a great idea that is going to make the Big XII so much money why is it very rarely discussed outside of this forum?

The Chicago gold mine proposal has been around for years but this fantastic idea has no traction outside of this forum.

If either Texas or Oklahoma was interested in playing Illinois or Northwestern at Soldier Field -- or vice versa -- it sure as hell wouldn't be dependent on NIU. Seriously, where is the logic in that thinking?

PrideinthePack hits the nail on the head: "The Chicago gold mine proposal has been around for years but this fantastic idea has no traction outside of this forum."

randyfensclub1 also puts the period on the whole Big XII issue: "You can't invite yourself."

I don't know what this boner for the Big 12 is. We have just as much of a chance to get into the SEC, so we should put all our energies there. Wouldn't it be great to play those teams every year in Huskie Stadium? I mean, we'd even have a chance to break 20K in attendance!

exactly. if the "chicago market" was a no brainer, this would have been done a long time ago.

...not without a B12 network which was distributed thru regional cable providers it wouldn't.

I believe there are at least 2 maybe 3 University of Texas bars in Chicago.

I see 385 people on a FB page, 353 web on Texas Exes pages with 108k members.

KU webpage states they have 8000 alumni living in Chicago, with an FB alumni page of 1100 followers.

So 2-3k max? In an area of 8 million + ? Would not say this is "a lot"

In comparison, MSU FB page for Chicago has 4300 likes, 2700 followers on Twitter.

Do not understand what the appeal of Chicago would be due to B12 Alumni living here.
