Seattle pushes sweeping new rules for worker schedules, employers cry foul
Quote:You’ve heard the battle cries over paying workers a “living wage.” Now, get ready for the next phase: “Livable schedules.”

On the heels of Seattle passing a controversial $15 minimum wage law, the City Council there is now drafting an ordinance that aims to shift power away from employers when it comes to how workers are scheduled and paid.

“I think there is a sense among some workers that they are being abused,” Seattle City Council member Lorena Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez is leading the effort to impose new rules on how employers schedule their workers. The ordinance is still being written, but it is expected to include:

A guarantee that workers get at least 11 hours of down time between shifts

A requirement that workers get schedules a week in advance, or else be paid time-and-a-half if shifts are added inside that timeframe

A requirement that employers pay employees for a few hours of work not performed if shifts are taken away

I think it is a bit over the top but I don't ultimately care what Seattle chooses to do, or not do.

once upon a time, I bowed to an engineering firm in the great northwest.....

that lasted 15 mos.....then I gave 'em this as the parting shot...was my 'exit interview'....

edit: it was really strange pulling up to get fuel and not priming that pump...a different breed they are....

Socialist utopia.

Welcome to a wasteland where the only thing surviving are the big box stores and chain restaurants that can afford this nonsense. Not to mention 11 hours between shifts?!?

hahahaaha. When I had to make ends meet I worked 3 jobs and often had 2-3 hours between shifts when necessary. Welcome to the public dole you otherwise hard working folks. Your benevolent gubment overlords are "looking out for you".

They tried the same thing in Minneapolis and it died when the reality of what it would do to businesses hit.

This will hurt areas near other cities. service industry establishments near "downtown" will have to bear it but anything marginally close to the next town over may consider moving.

good for Seattle...friend moved there 3 years ago...refuses to ever visit the South again, she's afraid she might get sucked back into the black hole.

Good for her, i am glad she found happiness. Of course, she won't be hurt by this asinine law.

This is good. Things like this need to happen at the local level so everyone can see what works and what doesn't. They elected these people. Let them build their cities as they wish. We'll see what happens.

I'm not crying for these fools. You want to push liberal agenda items, then don't cry when some of those hurt you.

I grind my beans in a burr grinder, boil some water, and 5 minutes later have a fantastic french press coffee that tastes infinitely better than that burnt roast from Starbucks.

I don't understand why people who not only pay that much for their coffee fix but wait in line that long on top of it.
