C-USA Swimming Championship
Women are tied for second after one day. They got third in the 200 yard medley relay and second in the 800 free relay with season best times in both events yesterday. The women have finished first, first and second at the last three conference meets. I'm not sure where they're predicted this year, but it seems to me that they're a bit younger this year so they might not be the favorites entering the meet?

I think WKU and FIU are the main competition and wouldn't be surprised with 3rd this year. Apparently FIU brings in a bunch of solid international swimmers.

Just 7 of the 24 women on FIU's roster are Americans.

WKU's swimming program was suspended for 5 years.

Jaecey Parham won the 200 IM in an NCAA B qualifying time to highlight today's results. I don't see a team score but fIu (putting an emphasis on the I for their international contingent) looks to be firmly in control of the team race.

RE: C-USA Swimming Championship
Just noticed that Seth Huston's daughter was third in the 500 Free earlier today. Pretty impressive for a freshman!

Best team scores I could find show: 1. FIU 339; 2. Marshall 222; 3. Rice 203; 4. UNT 160; 5. FAU 149; 6. ODU 116.

Counted five foreigners on the Rice roster.

Marie-Claire Schillinger wins the 100 breast in a really nice time of 1:01.69. Another nice performance today was Kaitly Swinney's 2nd place time in the 400 IM (4:16.15). We should be in second place comfortably by the end of today.

She would have just missed qualifying for the 1973 NCAA D1 Championship where John Allen (1:01.4 for fifth at the SWC championship in the 100 yard breaststroke) was the first and only Owl ever to qualify and compete at the National meet on the men's side. (NCAA rules have changed allowing for turns and streamlining that would have resulted in disqualification under the 1973 rules so a direct comparison is actually unfair.)

Maybe. Unfortunately Marshall will pick up some diving points, and we won't.

RE: C-USA Swimming Championship
If you want to feel even older, I'm good friends with a family out here who has three daughters who are excellent swimmers. The oldest is a high school sophomore who won the state meet in this event as a freshman and has also qualified for the Olympic Trials.

She finished second this year despite swimming 1:02.6 or so (would have won 6A). A girl from North Texas beat her by going 1:01.5.

I think *** and FIU are the main competition and wouldn't be surprised with 3rd this year. Apparently FIU brings in a bunch of solid international swimmers.

Very similar to Phill Hansel and his international UH teams back in the late 70s and early 80s. The Coogs were a solid third in the SWC with an international team on the men's side. Dave Parrington (now Tennessee's head diving coach) dove for the Coogs and competed for Zimbabwe at the 80 Olympics in Moscow. Peng Siong Ang (Singapore's long time Olympic team coach) won the 50 yard freestyle at the 83 NCAA championships and competed for Singapore at the 84 Olympics in LA.

Such success doesn't go unpunished as the Coogs dropped their team soon after Ang graduated. The NCAA cabal exists only as a money making enterprise for the P5 and tolerates Olympic sports only to prevent unelected bureaucrats from launching title IX investigations. Another reason why today most schools with FCS Football are so underrepresented in men's Olympic sports.

Seth Huston and our Owl women's team could be even more successful reviving our men's team. These competitors would complement the scholarship women. More athletes provide additional training partners to push swimmers in the grueling practice sessions leading to wins in competitions on the conference, national and international stages.

Schillinger also wins the 200 breast and I believe Rice finishes second (behind fIu and ahead of Marshall).

RE: C-USA Swimming Championship
Actually we may have finished third after all, since Marshall scored a lot of points in the last fly event. Also, they allow teams to enter two relays and score points from both squads? How asinine is that? We may have finished third because Marshall had two relays and got an extra 24 points from its second relay team.

Looks like they only allow one relay team to score per school. Owls are 2nd!

Women - Team Rankings - Through Event 21

1. Florida International Univ. 954 2. Rice University 636
3. Marshall University 618.5 4. North Texas, University of 467
5. Florida Atlantic University 380.5 6. Old Dominion University 360

RE: C-USA Swimming Championship
That was an interesting end to the meet.

Rice was initially announced as the 3rd place team, but there was then a break to check the scores before the 2nd and 1st place teams were announced. In the end, Marshall was announced in 3rd place and Rice in 2nd. No one was close to FIU in 1st.

Apparently, points were assigned incorrectly for 2 or 3 of the last events, including the last relay. Teams can only score points for a certain number of swimmers but points had been awarded for all swimmers in those finals.

I felt sorry for the Marshall team and fans, but everyone seemed to take it in stride.
