RE: Blazers and Herd to Fight for First
After watching UAB manhandle Middle Tennessee this past weekend, I'm not confident that Marshall has a chance if UAB plays to that same level. I'm hoping that Marshall brings our absolute best game and UAB struggles a bit. I respect the hell out of UAB, but having a #1 spot in CUSA this late in the season would be a first for Marshall and could really go a long way for the program, beyond just the obvious level-setting for this regular season.

Is UAB doing a black out for this game?

Yes. First 1,000 students get a free shirt. I'm hoping for a late surge in ticket sales because they look disappointing right now.

I've watched nearly every Marshall games since December and a couple before. I've been to Auburn, Middle Tennessee, La Tech, and watched Iowa St and Virginia Tech in Destin. Of all those teams, the Herd to me is one of the most confident on the floor. Elmore and Stevie both play with such high IQs that it seems that the game is so much slower for them. Kelly has been the most talented and athletic player on the court in every Marshall game this season (even WVU). You can never count out a team that is confident and knows how to execute with out having to think too much about it. I love this teams chemistry right now. We're in for what I think will be our toughest game this season tomorrow night.

RE: Blazers and Herd to Fight for First
I don't think that UAB beating MTSU the way they did was of any surprise. What worries me s having to play AT UAB and hopefully Marshall can rise up and play well. MTSU on Saturday isn't of concern but Louisiana Tech next week is though it's in Huntington. Then Southern Miss to close out the season. I'd love to get first to lock up the NIT bid but 2nd place would be nice too. I'll even take 3rd or 4th place. Just happy to be here and look forward to the last 4 games and pending post season.

Should be a heck of a game Thursday.

MTSU has turned into a bit of a mystery. Chemistry seems a bit off.

UTEP appears to be turning it on at the right time. La Tech seems to have the personnel but is Jekyll/Hyde home v. road.

Last two weeks (and the conf. tourney) seems as mixed up as a milkshake as far as trying to predict winners / losers.

RE: Blazers and Herd to Fight for First
No team has made it through the @UAB @MTSU part of the schedule with a win. Everyone is 0-2. MTSU has only lost to UAB and VCU in their place and we haven't lost a game in Birmingham since 2014. That being said, Marshall is the most talented team to try this year. I'm so ready for tomorrow night.

After the UAB @MTSU game, I don't imagine practice has been very fun for the MTSU players. I don't envy WKU for having to be the next team up. Doesn't help that WKU/MTSU is a rivalry. If I wasn't going to be at the Marshall/UAB game your game would be fun to watch.

I hope we whip your ass tomorrow night, but I'm happy to see Marshall's rise in basketball. Everybody in this conference could stand to get better, and the Herd is getting it done.

Would love to know how he was recruited to Marshall from Miami.

He hardly saw the floor at Miami. Just goes to show that it is more important to pick the right system than a certain school if you are a basketball player. Miami plays that plodding, defensive style, which doesn't exactly play to Kelly's strengths.

It will be interesting to see if a one year body of work gets him at least a D League opportunity.

CUSA players haven't faired well in the D League of late. Kelly will need to improve his three percentage.

I'm sure they would cut down on his 3 shooting if he had an opportunity at the next level. He shoots the 3 well when his shot selection is a little better. With our system, he, and everyone else, has a perpetual green light and sometimes that leads to a quick trigger.

Jim LarraƱaga and his staff were blind. At Miami year before last Kelly played a total of 182 mins and scored 162 points. Couple that with Kelly being 6'5 and 245 pounds, playing in a system where the coach would rather have the score in the 50s or low 60s. wasn't set up for Kelly's strengths.

At Marshall he is able to get out and run the court and he has more than one player that can set up plays for him to take it to the hole or slam it down each time. The pick 'n' roll is much more suited for Kelly also.

Kelly has said this himself. At the beginning of the year before Elmore became eligible he was trying to do to much. He thought he had to. After the Maryland game Kelly said he reevaluated his game and knew he had to cut down on 3s taken and play smarter, at the beginning of the season he was jacking up everything. Since then he has played a much better and much smarter game. Of course Elmore becoming eligible has helped too.

Although I am not positive, I would say this is the most likely of scenarios:
Before signing with Miami, he played at Owens Community College where he was teammates with fellow Herd member Justin Edmonds. I would say that they were close and spoke often and when things went south at Miami, Justin probably said, "Hey, come to Marshall. We have this new coach and the style of play will be right up your alley."
