Obama to present plan to close Guantanamo, move detainees to US
Quote:President Obama is expected to detail his plan Tuesday to close the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in a last-ditch effort to make good on a 2008 campaign promise.

Obama will speak at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Roosevelt Room, the White House announced, saying the topic would be Guantanamo Bay but giving no further details.

Obama’s address comes as the plan to shut down the controversial facility and transfer the remaining detainees to a holding center in the United States will be delivered to Congress.

The Pentagon has recently tried to convince lawmakers to close the detention center with a draft plan to move nearly 60 detainees to a facility on the U.S. mainland that would cost as much as $475 million to build but could save roughly $180 million in annual operating costs.

So the Republicans should be in favor of this since it's going to save money.

And Who's backyard will He move it to. I say an open air high wall prison in Alaska. Maybe under the Atlantic ocean inside a sunken ship just off Key West, Fl

I believe most of them (the actual terrorists) would be going to super-max prisons.

Maybe some of the inmates in the U.S. will kill them. We might save money twice.

Why are you shaking your head? Issa is right. As it stands right now it is against US law to move Gitmo detainees to the United States. If the Obama regime does indeed move them they are breaking the law. Jackson's relocation of Native Americans was against the law. It's a legitimate comparison.

http://thehill.com/policy/national-secur...lynch-says

Quote:The Obama administration is legally prohibited from bringing detainees from the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to the U.S., Attorney General Loretta Lynch acknowledged on Tuesday, even as the White House searches for ways to close the facility.

“With respect to individuals being transferred to the United States, the law currently does not allow that,” Lynch told the House Judiciary Committee. “That is not, as I am aware of, going to be contemplated, given the legal prescriptions.

“Certainly it is the position of the Department of Justice that we would follow the law of the land in regard on that issue.”

I doubt it would be cheaper.

RE: Obama to present plan to close Guantanamo, move detainees to US
I read it somewhere but can't remember. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs has already stated he will not authorize movement of the detainees to the US because it was against congressional law. He essentially stated even if Obama asked him, he will not break the law to carry this out.

Edit: can someone help me out with a link?

Quote:Lt. General William Mayville Jr., the director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said as much in a letter to Congress last week, which I obtained. Mayville's letter gets to the heart of a knotty constitutional issue on Guantanamo: Does President Obama have the authority to close the facility without the consent of Congress?

Writing to 16 House members who served in the military, Mayville writes: "Current law prohibits the use of funds to 'transfer, release or assist in the transfer or release' of detainees of Guantanamo Bay to or within the United States, and prohibits the construction, modification or acquisition of any facility within the United States to house any Guantanamo detainee. The Joint Staff will not take any action contrary to those restrictions."

Thanks. I knew I read it somewhere. Military leaders cannot be compelled to obey unlawful orders so I'm not sure how Obama can make him.

In fairness, he did try. Not hard enough in my opinion.

He's been blocked nearly every step of the way by Congress though.
