The new "newby's" shouldn't be allowed to use the name. Should be "$hitty Newbys".

Gentrified Newby's? It kind of reminds me of what happened to Huey's. I think that place was a biker bar when Boggs bought it in the 1970's. Even back in the 1990's it was still a bar that happened to do good lunch and dinner business. Now it is a full fledged restaurant that happens to have a bar.

That being said, it made business sense for Huey's.

I've only been to the "new" Newby's once and it was pretty early in the evening. I want to check it out again later in the evening when a band is playing.

"“This whole area was reaching a point where it could go either way. It could turn into Summer Avenue or it could turn into something cool. I think the (development district) has helped tip it in the right direction.’’

By “right direction,’’ Humphreys means a college district that feels like an appealing and safe place to walk, offering character and a sense of place."

Some say that Summer Avenue is as cool as it gets, at least in terms of character and a sense of place. I always like to take a ride down Summer in my yearly visits to my old stomping grounds.

A "safe place"? Probably not.

Sometimes though, a generic college-strip atmosphere is way better than nothing at all. And it's probably what 18 yr olds want anyway.

Yep; it's all about ease of access and sense of place.
I love Summer Avenue as a place to go find great food, but not a place to hang out & spend the evening.

RP Tracks was a dive until about 2000. I come back to town and it looks like Tilghman and Dalton cleaned the place up.

I heard the owner came into a little bit of money and wanted to make a better life for himself. He needed somebody to help him clean the place up, he needed the best. Wade Garrett was unavailable.

He was overheard to say recently that it was a good night, nobody got killed.

His employees aren't so sure, one responded that it will get worse before it gets better.

I love Summer Avenue for eating. Any street that has two Tops BBQ's within a few miles of each other is a great street. I also recently learned that the old Chinese Super Submarine Sandwich shop also relocated there. When the old shop was open just south of the tracks, I practically lived there my freshman year. For 5$ you could get a 12 inch sandwich, chips, and a drink. Went into the new place and had a 8 inch ham and roast beef. Damn good sandwich.

I grew up on South Reese St. in the 50s. Things were so safe back then that my friend and I walked the 3 or so blocks to the dime store on Highland to buy Mothers Day gifts when we were 4 or 5 yr. old--finger nail polish remover.

The best. I remember there was a beauty shop and a laundromat right around there. I'd have to go with my mom when she got her hair done or was washing clothes. If I was good, she'd buy me a BBQ sandwich at Little Pigs. Great sauce too.

That, or a slumber party, snicker-doodle, giggle fest at someone's expense.
