RE: Basketball Recruiting Update
The PG is different now from the Bob Cousy (s) days , players like Magic Johnson and before him the Big O turned the position into one that dominated the play in scoring, defending, steals, and the all important assists categories.
Isiah Thomas, John Stockton, Steve Nash continued the evolution of the position, now we have Russell Westbrook who is a freak at the position and in my opinion the best Guard in basketball, these players have changed the position into a hybrid position, players like Harden, Westbrook and Paul can guard and play the one or the two and guard the 3.
But for the PG to be a complete player at the position, he need to have a good back up, quick test who backed up Magic when he first got to the Lakers, okay I cheated and looked it up It was Norm Nixon a very good starting PG for the Lakers..
My point is the PG is constantly evolving and is now in my opinion a hybrid position dominated by the Big Guards and forwards like JAMES who can handle the ball and facilitated the execution of the game plan..
When Dirk is inserted into the game he can get the ball up court against his match-up, he can dominate his match up with the ball in his hands. The game is more and more about individual match ups due to players like, Magic, James , Westbrook and Harden. The High schools and the college game are changing to emulate the NBA game and we are starting to see more and more kids playing the 1 and the 2 at the local level.
For now, I like our PG and most of the time the match ups. As good as a defender Norton is, he can be exposed when playing the big PG, but he also exposed the big PG defending him so it works, because Norton is a special player and I said that from the first time I saw him practice..
But, I suspect Hasse preference is the Big 1 and 2 but they are gobbled up like the big Defensive tackles in football. I believe our next PG is already on the team or will soon arrived in the form of our newest recruits.
One thing for certain is a trust this coach to do the right thing the right way more than I have trusted a coach since Coach Bartow.
