Donor Base
NIU has Barsama, Yordon, Chessick. What other large donors do we have? Could we have? How does our donor base compare to others? When ever a big project is started, one of the big 3 donates the seed money to get it off the ground. To move up to a bigger conference, we need more that 3 major donors.

We have many large donors, several of which were at a fundraiser on Feb. 20th in Boca Raton, Fla. President Baker was there to introduce the new president of the NIU foundation. I was there and he did touch on the Illinois budget issue, which the Dems and GOP are getting much closer on. If you look at the NIU foundation honorees, you will find a few million dollar donors. There are a few of us who are friendly towards athletics, but we also respect the wishes of others who donate to their own causes. College of business, Education etc. Everyone has their favorites, but quite a few contribute in multiple areas. They actually had a corporation on campus last Tuesday that I was associated with for over 30 years. They also are trying to pair the convocation center with Huskie stadium naming rights with one particular group. I think they should do them on an separate basis. Dr. Baker was complimented on keeping us afloat in rough seas! Since someone mentioned Mike McGrath, I would comment that last year at a party at his home that I attended, he and his wife made a substantial donation to the school of business. Mike was President of his pledge class in 1966 when he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He has been a community leader and friend for many years.

Glad to hear that you Florida mega donors and corporate types are ponying up. I would expect the Master Plan then to get underway post haste.

RE: Donor Base
But how is our mega donor base compared to other MAC schools or AAC schools? At Notre Dame, on game days, they have dozens of private jets flying in for games. I drive my 1999 Malibu to games.

Dang! You are loaded! I drive a green 1976 Ford Pinto into my reserved executive spot at Huskie Stadium. That Pinto is more orange and brown than green - from all the rust. Athletics even told me that I am embarrassing them with my car. But I don't care. If they want my $50 per year, they'll shut up and let me drive that prized possession. I park with a few other nice cars:

RE: Donor Base
I know some people who give $5-10k to HASF but then donate $25k-50K for other projects when asked..
Look at the Chessick Center.. Sure the big 3 were there but there were also 5-10 other people giving $25k+

I just always think of Bud Nagel donation of $500k. I think it has been rescinded. After the "seed" money, not enough interest in updating the press box.

Why take it back? Why didn't the school leave it in a special account until they were ready or had more money for the project?

Unfortunately we don't have a Phil Knight or a T. Boone Pickens to foot the bill and mega donors don't grow on trees at NIU.

RE: Donor Base
While I attend games, many since 2003 after graduating in 93, I never donated until last few years. Albeit not a lot, something.
I appealed to my bandwagon NIU friends/grads after Orange Bowl. About 10 or so. One decided to get season tickets and donate, more than me. I told my friends we were in right direction, $100 a yr even helps. The guy who got the tix said my appeal was outstanding, but he is an NIU/sports fan. And actually, already has UW season tix along with Bears.
I think only of the remaining who I appealed to who didn't even acknowledge. Others making over 100k, 200+ with spouse have never dropped a dime since other than one or 2 games. They, like 98% of other have ZERO interest. They had minimal interest when attending NIU, road the wave Orange Bowl season now could care less. Same ones who would drop $50-100 for a night out for drinks or that amount for lottery tickets or one of many bets during football season. But zero interest in donating.
I think it's the me 1st, reinforced in their mind with family and not getting anything on their return in their mind. I think that goes for many in the 100k, even a million a yr plus family.(I do know NIU grad who makes a million a yr and they give nothing, but give to kids HS and have Bear tickets) NIU was a stop over in life, a party place and a degree for anyone over 30 for the most part.
I give a lot of kudos to those who donate 1k, even $500 more a year. Those in multiple thousands, it is highly appreciated. But people need to realize "old" money is almost non existent at NIU due to it being a teacher's school less than 50 yrs ago, lack of on the field success until recently with media coverage. Those who graduated in the last 10 years, successful western suburban professionals are the key to the future. They were here when it started and they need to be targeted and be the future.

This is right on the money. I would go as far as 15 years though. The earliest of this group should be coming out of the young family stage soon. Their kids will be getting older, which means more opportunities to splurge on things other than diapers and daycare.
