And some things, sadly, stay the same-- I think we had 1 - 8 success rate in bunt attempt this weekend. Conversely, Arizona was something like 9 - 10. 01-lauramac2

So you and I finally agree that Rice should bunt less? (jk)

I thought Wayne PHing Fox and them having him try to bunt 3 times with the bases loaded and one out was insane. Yesterday, Teykl bunting with runners on 1B and 2B, no outs, was the absolutely right thing to do, but our execution continues to be amongst the worst in all of D1 baseball. It is embarrassing. Again, bunting is a learned skill, and really not all that difficult. I know we put in the practice time, and I'm assuming our coaching staff know the proper techniques, but for some crazy reason very few of our players use the proper technique in game situations.

Few things upset me more than a coach who bunts every time a runner gets on. The bunt yesterday when DiCaprio had one strike was questionable. The Fox at bat today was one of the weirder and confusing things I've seen. Overall, that Fox inning was pretty bad. 1st and 3rd with a righty on the mound, I'd rather take my chances with Jeffries at the plate than going to Fox, because you had to know that the minute Fox got announced Arizona was going to go to a lefty. So you put Fox in a bad situation, which leads to the failed bunts, and then to have Kopycinski in against a hard throwing righty. We're really lucky Grayson hit that bomb because that was a seriously questionable inning.

Jefferies is also pretty fast afoot vs. Fox, who's arguably the slowest baserunner on our roster. With guys on 1B and 3B, one out, Jefferies has a far less chance of hitting into a doubleplay. Again, a real head scratcher from start to finish-- why have Fox PHing for Jefferies, and why have Fox bunting, particularly after he failed miserably on his first two attempts?

Positives from the weekend:

- Dup, Salinas, Esquivel, Myers and even Otto looked strong on the mound. (Otto ran into tough luck, both with the pinching by the home plate umpire and a couple weak, infield hits, sandwiched around the 3 errors). Looking forward to seeing how Amador (Tuesday) and Pathasarathy (Wednesday) pitch this week.;

- As some of us expected, our true Freshman duo of DiCaprio and Proctor can flat out hit, and deserve to be in the everyday lineup. DiCaprio surprised with how well he looked behind the plate defensively.

One last post from one who was at all three games.

The Friday performance was one of the few times I have left any Owl game in any sport before it was final, and I left in the sixth inning. it was that bad. We just were not ready to play.

But that was corrected in the next two games, and there was a positive slope in the performance track over the weekend. The team I saw Sunday was a good Rice team.

It was really good to see all the extra base hits Sunday. But, please, if I never see another Rice batter try to bunt, it will be too soon. Talk about trying to put square pegs in round holes. If a guy can't bunt, don't ask him to. Or teach him how. One or the other.

Tough weekend for Fox, but he's a tough guy and will handle it.

We made Sorenson's Ouch List, but not for the reason you would assume.

Quote:Why It Hurts: The scoreboard.
The scoreboard said that the Owls lost twice to the Wildcats this weekend. But according to my Owl sources down at Reckling Park, once again the big screen in right-center field wasn’t working at times this weekend. When I was there last season, the entire scoreboard was on the fritz and stood empty. That’s an awful big blank screen of confusion for the fans in attendance.

Note that he said "sources." This is a recurring topic and embarrassing. Thanks to Eric for putting it out there. Thanks to those who contacted him.

We need to let Fox focus on pitching.

Actually, his sources were wrong! There were two small lines at the lower left side of the screen, but the video was good. GREAT game Sunday except for the throwing error by Salinas early and the poor bunting late. Very exciting and star show for Myers!! 04-cheers

His sources were right. The "at times" was the whole game Friday. No video, unless you count the two small lines and a few random red dots.

We'll have to live with the scoreboard issues this year. Next year, we'll have the new one up.

It's gonna be that bad all year? Or it will be intermittent all year?

Must be a new rule this yr.

I don't think so, I think instead it was because Arizona had been repeatedly warned about their bush/little league approach of emptying the dugout for every little thing (in fact, one of those guys got tossed out on Saturday), so it looks like the umps were trying to give the appearance of equal treatment.
