I am not saying jump, but at least have the conversation.
Houston and UC are gone if we do get the invite.
Where is Houston going?
I doubt the Big 12 wants them. They already have four Texas schools.
Big 12 likely takes Cincy and one other school (probably BYU or UConn).
Remember, Houston used to be in the same conference as Texas, Texas A&M, TCU, Texas Tech, & Baylor back when they were all a part of the Southwest Conference, so it's not like it'd be completely new for them.

We are not going to a Power 5, PERIOD. We have a second rate conference that is not going anywhere, PERIOD. American Conference has name recognition schools, and we need to jump ship as fast as possible while we have a chance, PERIOD.

Cincy, UConn and Houston are all the most likely B12 candidates. BYU has fallen out of the picture for the most part.
BYU seems to have enough of a following to make the independent status work for them.
I've always said Texas would be another that would be able to make it work as an independent if they wanted to, particularly with the Longhorn Network already set up.

I would imagine most people in the city of Houston are Texas fans and are already watching Big 12 games. UT is less than 3 hours from Houston
In terms of academics and athletic prowess are they a better addition than BYU?

Houston is LOADED with money and they are a large research university. Academically they are certainly in the same group as other Big12 schools if not better.

RE: NIU contacted by the AAC
Honestly, i wouldn't have an issue with us going to the AAC. It would be difficult to get to the road games for most NIU fans. Their bowl games are certainly much better and in better locations.
But considering the increased financial commitment, could we make it work?
Our student population continues to decrease (less athletic fees for the department) and the school itself is hurting for money in a state that can't pass a budget and has continued to give NIU less and less money each year.

You forgot one of the biggest things as far as this board is concerned.
No more November weeknight games.

As someone who lives in DFW...it would be great for me. Tulsa is less than four hours away and SMU is right here in the city.

RE: NIU contacted by the AAC
Without a long term jump to a P5 conference, this is a high risk move due to travel costs for all sports. I just hope that the downside risk has been thoroughly vetted because failure could send the football program back light years. The upside is nice, but what is the probability of hitting that?

RE: NIU contacted by the AAC
I know football gets all the hype but the AAC has great basketball too. SMU is #12 in the RPI right now. Having teams like SMU, Tulsa, and Temple play in the Convo would be some of the best home opponents to ever play in that building. Also would be nice on the hoops side to be in a league where more than one tourney bid is feasible.

RE: NIU contacted by the AAC
Houston averaged 34,000 fans in a season in which they won a BCS bowl. BYU averaged 58,500.
Houston's basketball game vs Memphis had 4,300 in attendance (couldn't find the attendance for their most recent home game). BYU's last home game vs University of San Diego had 16,300 in attendance.
BYU was ranked #66 for National Universities Rankings by US News. Houston was ranked #187.

BYU is a mormon school. It will hold them back no matter if that is right or not, because they won't compete in ANY sport on sundays. Makes it very hard to schedule.
