I feel sorry for coach Pastner.
Pastner took what may have been our second best recruiting class ever, and in 4 years won 2 NCAA games total. He destroyed the career of possibly top high school point guard Memphis has ever produced. He wrecked Will Barton's NBA career, throwing it off the tracks for years. He took Adonis Thomas and turned him into a two star player. He ran off perhaps his best player, Austin Nichols, failing to even communicate with the young man for months, or keep up with the teams dynamics during the off season. He never once signed an assistant who could truly coach and we will likely lose the heart of this team as Pastner walks out the door. I'm sure he will pocket millions in the process for stepping down so graciously. If he had a song to describe his career here, it should be, "I did it my way".

I love Will, but he wasn't ready for the NBA yet.
Josh had Cyprien and Willis Reed coaching with him the first couple of years..and I'd argue that BOTH of them can coach their azzes off.

I will always feel bad for these top guys who came to play for him and got nothing on the court out of it. Had we hired the right guy with the wave of talent that came out of this city his first few years we wouldn't have dropped off much at all.

I feel bad at a personal level - just because Josh takes the time to add the personal touch.

At the same time, I feel bad for the players, parents, and us who have gone through the past few years.

I am having waves of sadness after finding this shirt today, so I put it on just to remember those good ole days. We were a 2 seed--first game Cal State Northridge. Sallie saved us.

RE: I feel sorry for coach Pastner.
Just thinking where Barton would have been after 2 years with Cal and his discipline. No he wasn't ready, after 2 years with Pastner he wasn't one step closer to being NBA ready, that's why I used the word wrecked. His time here had to be repaired, like a car that was wrecked. It's the way I see it, yes Barton deserves some of the fault but the players lack basketball discipline. Pastner not communicating at all with Nichols over an entire summer explains a lot. Yes I wish it had turned out differently but looking back,, well Pastner only real success was Geron Johnson, and he does deserve credit for his development. We have been failing to achieve any real goals since Pastner signed on and have gotten worse every year. A 31 win team knocked out on opening weekend of the NCAAs, that's his best. Meanwhile he smiles as Johnson gets phantom fouls during the game. Sorry, just tired of it.

I don't feel sorry for Josh at all. You reap what you sow. His apparent refusal and/or inability to learn from his mistakes and reluctance to take helpful advice did him in. I just can't be sorry for someone like that will still benefit financially for being a failure.

You can't teach what DJ brings to the table. Playing time brought those gift to the forefront.

Agree, DJ has something not many others during CJP's tenure seemed to have, heart.

RE: I feel sorry for coach Pastner.
Overall it really is hard to feel sorry for him but there are many aspects to this debacle about which I can sympathize with Josh on a personal level. Even those circumstances he created for himself can be identified with by every person who has pursued something and fell short. Hell, it's an even more bitter pill to swallow when one has to face that it was ones own behavior and decision making which led to ones failure.

The money aside of course...

He doesn't see it that way. We are delusional because the only success we had was Cal.

I don't feel sorry for Josh. He's a nice guy, but not a d1 head coach. If he's leaving I wish him well. If he's staying, I hope year 8 is better. I also don't blame Josh for any of this. He didn't ask for the job. He didn't ask for the big contract. And it's apparent, he didn't ask for any help from his assistants.

Link?

Edit: just found the link. Check his stats per 40 minutes. Hardly any difference

http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/play...ens-1.html

The only difference was his freshman year where he was probably yanked out every time he missed a shot. The rest of the years are minuscule.
