Game Week: WMU and @BSU
The next week (and the week after) are crunch time.

We should be approximately a 6 or 7 point favorite but a 4 point underdog Saturday at Ball State.

As was discussed in another thread, an EMU win Tuesday will give us, because of the tie-breakers, 8th place in the MAC standings with the loser of NIU/CMU.

Winning 3 of 4 against WMU and CMU would make me happy.

Interesting that EMU and WMU could tie for best record within the MI instate series.

CMU is 0 - 3.

WMU is, though, 2 - 0 (wins vs us and CMU).

We are 2 - 1 (loss to WMU).

A win vs. WMU would make us 3 - 1 and WMU 2- 1.

WMU plays CMU the last weekend of the season so they could tie, 3 - 1, with a win over the Chips.

• Eastern Michigan almost certainly won't get an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, so they need to earn an automatic bid by winning the MAC tournament.
• As for that automatic bid ... Eastern Michigan has a 4% chance to win the conference tournament, which means the outlook is bleak, but stranger things have happened.

If we beat WMU and CMU manages to beat WMU at home in their return meeting, EMU would win the Michigan MAC Trophy in Basketball for the first time since they started awarding it. That would be a nice feather in our cap for this year at the very least.

Yes and since we also beat U of D and had a close game against Oakland perhaps that would speaks volumes of where we are vs instate competition?

Oakland is probably the best in state school, but EMU is right there. I truly believe EMU should be the best in-state school year after year. Murphy has closed the gap this year because I do not see WMU beating us at home although I believe it will be a very close game.

Now if Murphy could land some occasional incoming local freshman on the Recruiting trail.

According to the game notes, our daily RPI is 133. WMU is 205.

Why (should EMU be the best in-state, G5, school)?

Oakland suffers from not having football, but otherwise, has a LOT, LOT, LOT going for it. Excellent school. Great location. Very nice arena. It is close to Detroit.

We seem to be part of the 'Ann Arbor area.'

I don't see how one can say EMU has more natural advantages in basketball than most other MI G5 schools (e.g., CMU, WMU, Oakland).

Getting back to WMU @ EMU.

WMU will be VERY tough NEXT year. They lose Avery but pick up Connar Tava.

So they'd have Wilder, Haymond, Tava and presumably one center will develop.

Those are some good ball players.

Steve, Good points. I think back in the day before Oaklands emergence, EMU had the advantage of drawing the metro detroit recruits who wanted to be close enough for friends and family to come watch them play. EMU is now sharing that with Oakland, plus there is less talent pool available than say 30 years ago (Luckeyone, you are showing your age with that statement) CMU and WMU have alternative selling point that they have more of a captive local market. No reason to say anyone has a clear advantage over anyone else.

Oakland has an on campus arena. What percentage of their students are commuters? Is it similar to EMU?

Oakland seems to get a little more love from the Det media but nothing significant. At least they have the Oakland Press which is much better then the Ann Arbor News.

Not to mention some of their young guards (Moore, Davis) will have a year of experience under their belt. The west should be pretty darn good next year. CMU, who loses Fowler, Simons, and Simmons, will likely be picked to finish last. But everyone else returns a giant chunk of their production.

RE: Game Week: WMU and @BSU
Some things I'd like to see this week...

-Willie Mangum continue his hot shooting. He's 41% from 3 over the last 10 games, and that includes the 0-5 dud against Kent State. The kid has quietly found his stroke. Let's hope he can keep it up.

-A bounce back for JT4. He's coming off the worst game of his career, which was preceded by him being ejected in Ohio after getting thoroughly outplayed by Tony Campbell. Could be signs of him hitting a freshman wall (and the 31 minutes per game catching up with him), but I expect him to return to his usual self against a couple teams that he had success against earlier this year.

-Two wins? Knock on wood, but Murphy has never lost at home against WMU, as well as in Muncie. A couple winnable games this week.

EMU is indeed a 6.5 point favorite tonight. Total points: 151 1/2. Roughly 79 - 73.

Vegas has CMU a 6 point favorite over NIU. If CMU wins, we are tied with NIU for #8 with the Huskies holding the tie breaker. That sets up a big game vs. them in Ypsi.

Yes, this week is spring break. I wouldn't expect much of a crowd for the game tonight. However, as the games become more exciting I hope we see more community and alumni fans out. I don't think we will see JTIV put up another dud. Those two monsters of UT did an excellent job of keeping him contained but clearly (per naz's performance) they may have given him a bit too much attention. I think he will bounce back tonight. WMU has a couple of big guys (a freshman and sophomore I believe) which could cause issues but hopefully they learned from UT and give Thompson a little more room to operate. If they don't we could see another big game for Naz. All of that said, beating WMU this year is a game at the guard/SF spot. We gotta find a way to stop Wilder and Haymond. Wilder went nuts on us earlier this season. Jordan Nobles playing some D and Bond having a similar defensive performance to the the other night is key to winning this one. I think we can beat them with length and athleticism.

Excellent points.

One thing, and I think you made the point well, is that we have a number of offensive weapons. WMU can 'pick their poison.'

As you indicate Naz looks good when the opponents double on JT4. I don't think the WMU bigs (Lamont, Dugan, etc.) can match Boothe, Garber, etc. I expect JT4 to have a good game tonight.

Mangum has been shooting very well.

So the 'bottom line' is who will have big game(s) [plural] tonight? JT4? Naz? Mangum? Lee?

To me, it doesn't really matter, points are points and rebounds are rebounds regardless of who gets them.

That said, a hot shooter behind the arc does more damage than a big man like Naz.

A 3-point shooter who shoots 50% is averaging 1.5 points per shoot. That's like shooting 75% of 2-pointers. FT% are usually worth about 0.7 points per attempt. So fouling a shooter is like giving up 1.4 points, on average.
