UNLV had JCs on their back to back FF rosters.
Wichita has made a living off of JCs.
Schools like Butler and VCU don't.
Gonzaga has been taking high level DI transfers of late - Wiltjer, JW3 from Memphis that was at Missouri.
So, yeah, while I agree that fundamentally you want the foundation of a successful basketball program to be developed HS talent, I also understand there are many different ways to recruit/win at the DI level, especially for non P5 schools.
I agree you take talent however you can get it. If Ben Simmons was coming from the JUCO ranks, you take him. Same goes for grad-transfers.
But it's harder to rely on those guys MOST of the time. (Jucos more so than high level transfers)
Agree - I just won't be surprised if the next coach goes a little heavy toward GTs/JCs for year one.
As bad as next years roster will be that's the route the next coach will have to take
The number one issue with the next coach, whomever it is, will be the Keelon situation.
They already on it doe

At this point do we really want to keep signing juco's and graduate transfers or do we just want to let the freshmen and sophomores play and build it back from the bottom?
Pastner was under a lot of pressure to 'win now'. His decimated roster required that he go grab grads and jucos which was basically recruiting over the young guys who then DIDN'T develop and...the cycle is ugly.
If you have more than 1 or maybe 2 grads / jucos at any one time the chemistry is constantly in flux and it just doesn't seem to work well very often.
IMO Grads and jucos should be used sparingly to cover: 1) an offseason injury, 2) a surprise transfer, or 3) a recruiting bust at one position.
It won't be much fun for a year or two but at some point the program is going to have to bite the bullet and hope 1-3 above are very limited.
People always get gun shy because a crappy coach signed crappy players - i.e. Pastner or Tommy West.
Taking GTs or JCs is fine if you have a coach who knows how to either evaluate talent or develop talent.
Almost everything is fine in moderation.

RE: How many players leave
Grad Transfers are a good option for next season. The new coach won't have time to recruit many quality freshmen, therefore, you'd rather a grad transfer fill out the roster than a crappy freshman or JuCo player in order to have the open scholarship for the next recruiting class, when the new coach has a full year to recruit.
We're gonna have 6-8 open scholarships this spring, and only 1 senior next year (Woodson). Gotta make sure we can sign 4+ freshman next year.

Serious question: Does it really matter beyond the Lawson's? If they left, would be a huge loss.
Yep. The Lawsons would be the only players with eligibility who have high major talent.
I barely even know the names of anyone else on the team.
Marshall has potential to be a very solid player for us given the right coach to foster development...
Yes , Marshalls really coming along , you can see his confidence growing each game.

He, Markel & Martin could really benefit from a coach that can develop players...

RE: How many players leave
GT's and jucos will almost certainly be used next year. Look at the roster. Then think about a new guy scrambling for his first recruiting class. It will help plug the gaps.
Going forward, we should expect an average of a transfer out and one in every year. It's the game, today. Then you fill-in the 4 person recruiting class with 3 freshmen and 1 transfer/juco. As someone said, it's the law of averages.

I agree Markell seems to be really athletic and Nick seems to have soft hands which really helps on the inside . Martin I really havent seen enough of him to have an opinion .
