Expectations for the new coach?
What's reasonable?

Here's mine:

Year 1: 2016-17 - .500 - no postseason but look like a basketball team.

Year 2: 2017-18 - 20-22 wins - NIT (win 1 or 2)

Year 3: 2018 -19 - 24-26 wins - NCAA (win 1) / NIT Final 4

Year 4: 2019 -20 - 26-28 wins - a legitimate threat to make the NCAA 2nd weekend

Year 5: 2020 - 21 - 26-28 wins - a favorite to make the Sweet 16

It's going to be awhile before Tiger bb is fun again.

I respectfully disagree. If we hire the right guy, and I think there are several coaches that could be the right guy, we can win quicker than what you are projecting.

With the right coaching, Tiger B can be fun next year. Pastner won a game in the NIT his first year and would have made the sweet 16 if not for some unfavorable scheduling. No way the Tigers win in Oxford that year, poorly officiated game.

The right coach and a couple of recruits can go far in two to three years.

Brand building is essential. Lot of work needed after Josh deep-six'd the program. Don't care if we have back to back losing seasons as long as it appears that we have a coach that can...you know, coach! A few posters who abandoned the sinking ship a while back (*cough*MissJ*cough*) will come scurrying back. Give it a couple of years and we'll be back to having a legit shot of landing a couple nice near blue-chips each year and good shot at winning an at large bid in the tourney if not 1st class ticket to March by winning the tourney.

I've got us at 25 wins in year three? How much quicker would be reasonable to expect?

I hope we have a change in coaches for next year but t
his board will be after the next coaches head if that is his first 5 years. A lot were after Pastner's head after year 3 and you think that this board will be happy with your 1st 5 years.

Pastner:
Year 1: 26-10 - 2nd rd NIT
Year 2: 25-10 - 1st rd NCAA
Year 3: 26-9 - 1st rd NCAA
Year 4: 31-5 - 2nd rd NCAA
Year 5: 24-10 - 2nd rd NCAA

Pearl will not be our next coach.

But Pastner inherited a top 10 national program.

The new coach will inherit a nuked program.

What are the expectations for the new coach?
In my opinion, during the Pastner era we have somewhat lowered our expectations in order to seem more reasonable as a fan base, and give some leeway to a coach who is a good guy and most everyone wanted to succeed.

Making the tournament most years and a deep runs every 3-5 years is what our history suggests.

Yet I am of the opinion that we should be looking for a coach to take us beyond where our history suggests and hold him to that standard.

Not expecting a repeat of the end of the Cal era, but regular sweet sixteen appearances and an threat to make the final four occasionally should be what we look for from our coach.

Larry Finch had two sweet sixteens in 10 years (minus the first ineligible) year and 6 tournaments out of those 10 years.

This should be the LEAST we expect from our coach. If this is too daunting of a task for a candidate or this fanbase has too crazy expectations then the coach might want to bypass this job.

If we consider our selves to be a top 25 program, and pay like a top 25 program, then we should expect those kind of results and better.

What say you?

I am of the opinion that two consecutive years of not making the tournament should get the coach fired.

Memphis should never go two years of not making a field of 68 teams.

Normally I'd say he needs to be in a sweet 16 within 5 years. But we are back to 1997 and back then it took us 9 years to get back there. This next hire may not be the guy. At least he needs to get the brand recognition back with recruits. Our program should at least be on a par with Xavier, Nova and Wichita St.

He needs to bring the excitement back and put fans back in the Forum again. If he does that, he on the way to where expectations are for this program
