Come on now. The Owls are in the middle of an offensive explosion. We've matched our season total for runs.

Now doubled it!

Combination of mental blunders/bad fielding and it's 3-2 again.. One out, men on first and third for the wildcats

With the way things are going with both of our basketball teams and our baseball team, I suspect we will in the next few years waiting for the basketball rather baseball season to start.

Grrr. So much for a perfect Saturday. Men's basketball, women's basketball, men's tennis, women's soccer, but not our blue chip sport. Dang it. Chin up, fellas. Come out tomorrow and get one. Go Owls.

A whole bunch of "they aren't worth watching this year" from the casual fans around us/in the roost. Small crowds coming for conference play.

Not sure why people thought this year would be different. It's the same problems, over and over and over again, and no willingness (or ability) to correct it.

Figure out how we can compete with non-athletic scholarship money a la Vanderbilt / TCU. That's on Karlgaard to discuss with the university administration. The players we have right now aren't cutting it compared to the Vanderbilts, Virginias or TCUs of the world. Those schools have started paying more attention to baseball since the mid 2000s, and we need to do whatever we can to compete with them for the best recruits. It is paramount that the athletic department and the university are 100 percent committed to putting our most successful athletic program back in contention for CWS berths and national championships. Or, we can listen to the excuse making, while we continue to slowly decline and then wake up one day when Rice baseball misses the NCAA tournament.

The season certainly is only two games old, but this small fraction of results doesn't exactly inspire confidence that this team is going to prove the pundits wrong and make a run to the CWS.

RE: Arizona @ Rice SATURDAY baseball game thread
While the non-athletic scholarship is an issue it isn't the sole reason for our decline which has been evident for more than 5 years. We have become a very passive team compared to the Omaha years both on the field and in the dugout. I can't imagine Townsend, Savery, or others from that era not lighting a fire under the team's butt but we seem to be without that attitude since those days.

As far as the non-athletic scholarship issue is concerned I saw an article recently about the problems LSU and the other Louisiana state schools are beginning to have. As most know LSU has been able to use the majority of their 11.7 'ships on out of state players because almost all of the players from in-state receive free tuition based on their academic standing in high school. This article http://footballscoop.com/news/governor-o...ign=buffer points to the possibility that budget cuts will have an impact on the field for LSU and others. I would think that baseball will be particularly hard hit.

A good start would be getting rid of Patrick Hallmark, he is embarrassing Rice. He is a complete asshat.

"Asshat" is the sort of characterization that ought to be substantiated. What do you base that on?

I do not think it is an unwillingness to change, I think it is an inability. The kids that would come to Rice to play instead of taking a 5th through 10th round pick in the MLB draft and starting their minor league career would have made a huge difference. I feel as if we lose kids now we would not have lost during the amazing run we had, at or near the top of the heap.
