RE: The Morass & Cost of Volleyball
Sounds like a lot of folks on this message board weren't around then, or don't recall, but in 1991, William & Mary announced the decision to cut 4 sports -- Women's Basketball, Wrestling, and Men's and Women's Swimming. It was a cost-cutting measure to save $300,000.

Here's a February 1991 Washington Post article announcing W&M's decision:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/s...d79c4fae3a

Ten days later, The College announced that the 4 sports would be reinstated. Two reasons: avoiding a Title IX related lawsuit, regarding women's basketball and women's swimming; and a groundswell of financial support, much of it from alum in those sports. Here's a Daily Press article from late-February, 1991, about that decision.

Then, in 1994, W&M made the decision to cut Wrestling (again), along with fencing.
Here's a '94 Daily Press article about it ...

Today, many of W&M's non-revenue sports have built their own endowments, to protect themselves from future budget cuts. For example, the Tribe's swimming program has their own endowment of over $2 million, raised from program alum and supporters. I've also heard from former Tribe gymnasts, who have spoken of their program's substantial war chest, raised in large part because of desire to sustain the gymnastics program in perpetuity.

Too bad. College wrestling meets are a ton of fun. Does anyone know where they were held? I have to imagine that the Hall was way too big. And it seems like fencing would have been a good fit at W&M.

I'd imagine primarily in Blow Gym...I think it was in use until the early 90s.

There used to be a wrestling room in the basement of WM Hall. Not sure if the meets were held there or in the main arena of the Hall. I don't believe Blow was anything other than a rec center from the time WM Hall opened until the current rec center opened. Then it was converted into offices. Anyone feel free to correct me though.

Blow Gym housed the school of business in 1988. I remember because I had classes there. Not sure when it officially went from gym to academic building, but it must have been either 87 or 88.

Dick Besnier started wrestling at Blow Gym in 1965 and actually held Southern Conference Tourament there. He brought program from nothing to a formidable program. Blow Gym was a great facility to watch wrestling.

The wrestling team wrestled in Blow Gym rarely in its latter years. I was there from 86-90 and most of our matches were in the Hall. And yes, dropping the sport created tremendous ill will among wrestling alums. I understood the realities. If you have a football team, the other men's Olympic sports will be few and far between at a school the size of W&M. Still, I resented the decision since our program was operated on a shoe string budget to begin with. I am not sure it was really a cost saving measure as much as it was a Title IX numbers issue

So, you probably wrestled with Thierry Chaney? Had pleasure of meeting him when he was a local kid out of York HS and then remember him being inducted into W&M Athletics Hall Of Fame back in 2011. Was a 2x winner of EIWA "Outstanding Wrestler" award and went to NCAA's 3x. Best wrestler in W&M history?

Tierry and I came in together and remain good friends. Great guy. He and I are a part of a group of W&M wrestlers that get together at the NCAA wrestling championships each year. Really good time. Best wrestler at W&M? I'm not going there. Tierry was one of 4 guys from around that time period who have been inducted in the W&M HoF (Mark McLaughlin, Rob Larmore, and Buzz Winchezski being the others) and Rob was an All American. Mark, Buzz and Tierry wrestled each other a lot in practice so I am sure each has their own opinion about who was the best at any given time.

Volleyball team lost its twelfth in a row yesterday to bring record to 2-16 and 0-5 in CAA. In almost all matches we have lost three sets to none.

However, freshman Julia Brown is a good player. We need to get other good players around her.
