ESPN: Big 12 Roundtable
Quote:Rittenberg: Right. The Big 12 doesn't have the luxury to add a really poor athletic program. The Big Ten had that.

Dinich: It's hard to project, though, and one Big 12 coach I talked to said there is talk about trying to look ahead, who could add that strength down the road.

Trotter: Memphis is an upside program, with the FedEx money behind it.

Rittenberg: That's why I think Memphis merits more discussion.

Rittenberg: There's FedEx money, strong booster support elsewhere. They've upgraded the Liberty Bowl. They have really good Sunday-Friday facilities for football. I visited there last fall and came away very impressed.

Trotter: Memphis expands the footprint, too. And it's in a logical location, relative to the rest of the league.

Sounds like ESPN likes us. I thought they were behind UCONN, though?

These are just of the opinions of the talking (writing) heads. But, they have at least spoken with various Big12 folks...more so than most twitter trolls anyway. Who knows what the execs want...though 0-12 UCF had better ratings than bowl eligible UCONN.

I was in Dallas last week and ran into a businessman from Memphis. He said that we were a LOCK for the Big 12. And, that the announcement will be on Tuesday.

I'd say three different ESPN guys talking up the merits of the Memphis program and knowing what they are talking about says a lot.

Well, here we go again. Another Big 12 smoke thread. I'm not complaining as I enjoy the reads and IMO if guys on ESPN are chatting up the merits of Memphis, that's better than not being in the conversation at all.

I think we are one of about five teams that have a shot. Zero idea where in that 5 we are. But I agree, better to be in the discussion than out.

Confirms what we all kind of think. We're not a lock, but we are under consideration.

I'm with Hoop and do like it is on the WWL's radar.

Conjecture? ESPN said UConn and Bevo said 'Pfffft' and ESPN said 'Memphis?'
Really, who knows. It's fun to be considered.

I'm just saying - it's not some joe blow on a message board.

It's a three ESPN college football reporters.

And outside of the pipe dream scenario - Florida State - they really only talk about three programs - Cincinnati, Memphis, and BYU.

Says more to me that three ESPN college football reporters mention Memphis and know particulars about Memphis than does years of message board innuendo and speculation.
