Memphis in May Great River Run
For all you runners or folks who enjoy stuff like this:
http://www.memphisflyer.com/NewsBlog/arc...athon-race
"The Great American River Run will be held on May 28th, 2016. The race course will run along the bank of the Mississippi River and through downtown and feature live entertainment along the route. There will also be a post-race festival with music, food, and beverages on the river bluff.
Runners will have an opportunity to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project, a service organization for wounded veterans of post-9/11 military actions. A portion of the race's registration fees will also go toward the Wounded Warrior Project.
“Our city sits on America’s greatest river, and we want to celebrate this tremendous local asset with a healthy lifestyle event for local participants and running enthusiasts from across the country.” says James L. Holt, President and CEO of Memphis in May International Festival. “We also want to honor our veterans and celebrate all they do, and have done, for our country, which is the true purpose of the Memorial Day Weekend holiday.”

RE: Memphis in May Great River Run
Races are popular these days. In January they are supposed to announced the 2nd MIM that will combine with this new race to replace the Sunset Symphony.
While I've got no problem with the race, I have to admit that I was kind of sad to see the SS be retired.

Sounds like a good race for a good charity.
I'll be there.

I'm guessing it will be some sort of concert/fireworks thingy that will pick up after the race festivities are done. Sort of a post race concert/event.

The story in the Flyer that you linked reads that..."there will also be a post-race festival with music, food, and beverages on the river bluff."
Makes it sound like there will be another additional event besides the race and post race stuff. Maybe something the next day?

Yeah, it would need to be something more than another race for me to get stoked about it. During May, there's already the Oak Hall run, I believe. This is for a good cause (I hope, although I've received a facebook notice about a troubling WW act ignoring/neglecting needs of a family that may be just a disgruntled family or isolated incident, but I don't give them a blanket unquestioned support).
I hope that could be part of an outdoor-themed weekend of several activities to signal the beginning of summer. A few weeks after that is the Canoe Race. We no longer have the Outdoors Fest that Agricenter used to host. There could be a demand for something of a spring signature outdoors fest.
If it's just another 5K, there are dozens a year in Memphis.

Like the link notes, it's a half marathon and a 5k. Memphis doesn't have any real 1/2's except for St. Jude. The Greenline 1/2 in Oct is nice, but it's isn't a huge run. The Germantown is, well, in Germantown has has little to no post race festival.
People actually travel into cities to run half's and to enjoy the city. Obviously there will be more to the weekend, but many it would do well for the city to have another destination running event.

For some reason I spaced on the 1/2. hope they make it an iconic event of regional if not national prestige.

There is an outdoor festival held at Shelby Farms that has a trail run race, MTB race, rock walls, and all kinds of other stuff.

On a related note, there doesn't appear to be any mention of the MIM Triathlon on the MIM website. Start 2 Finish isn't producing the race this year but another company (PR Event Management) is apparently putting it on and they're distributing material saying that the MIM Tri will be on May 22nd.
