NIU to play Toledo at US Celluar Field
http://m.daily-chronicle.com/2016/02/17/...9/asrorbe/
NIU is moving a home game on Nov 9, 2016 to US Celluar Field, the home of the White Sox in Chicago. This will be the first college football game ever played at the Cell.
Nov 9 is a Wed night. I guess that beats playing in Dekalb on a Wed, but really? They could not get a nice Saturday afternoon time slot for this game?

No we couldn't...ESPN wouldn't allow it because the NIU/Toledo game is the biggest MAC game in terms of ratings and they are not going to give that up.

I'm sure the field would be available. Unfortunately, ESPN isn't.
This will be some fun television. I can already feel the #MACtion.

LOL, I hope they do. Unless there's 8,000 people there. Then I hope they don't.

We NIU fans all do
Although I think this is our AD testing the waters on how much of the Chicago market NIU can actually garner the attention of. We took over the NU game, if we can have a solid turnout here it would certainly help to add to NIU's appeal for a league looking to add the 3rd largest media market.

Yeah I don'the get it. They could have sold the place out on a saturday. Maybe even a Friday night. If on a friday night, people could take friday off and check into hotel Friday afternoon.
But nobody is going to want to fight Chicago traffic wed afternoon/evening in November to watch this game. Maybe if the weather is decent, they will get a huge walk up crowd.

ESPN bends us over and tells us when to play, we couldn't take their MAC golden goose game of NIU vs Toledo off MACtion time man... it just wasn't gonna happen

This past season's World Series could have ended on Nov. 4 if it went the full seven, not factoring in rain/snowouts. Wonder if the game would get moved if they thought the White Sox might make the Series?

I'm sure if its happening in Chicago there must be a basis for believing that it will draw enough to justify the location.

1) The B12 isn't expanding. Not now. Maybe not ever.
2) If the B12 ever does expand, the AAC is not likely to last.
3) If the B12 expands and the AAC still is ticking, NIU is not going to be invited.
The MAC is more likely to add AAC schools than it happening the other way around.

That's probably because they still have to deal with the Royals.

I don't think they have too much to be concerned about here.

How come it wasn't done the first Sunday before the NFL started? That would be the best case scenario imo if they didn't want to go up against the major conferences.

Possible.
Quote:2) If the B12 ever does expand, the AAC is not likely to last.
Eh, the AAC was still formed with only Cincinnati, USF and UConn left from the old football Big East. The AAC will last, albeit as C-USA circa 2010 with a different name.
Quote:3) If the B12 expands and the AAC still is ticking, NIU is not going to be invited.
I agree with you there. UMass and Rice are the 2 most likely backfill options.
Quote:The MAC is more likely to add AAC schools than it happening the other way around.
Nooooooo. Sh*t ALWAYS runs downhill in conference realignment. There is no instance of a weaker conference being able to usurp a league ahead of it in the pecking order simply because of attrition. Even when there are only 3 schools left in the league (as we saw with the old Big East/now AAC), they still have poaching power over the ones below them for many reasons (i.e. existing TV agreements, NCAA Tournament credits, bowl agreements, etc.).

Naw, I don't think so. The MAC is and always will be near-full. The AAC would have to collapse for any other G5 to take from theirs.
The AAC could end up taking NIU, Ohio, or Toledo from the MAC if it dissipates... and Marshall, LA-Tech, or W. Kentucky too.

That is correct generally.
In the even the B12 loses 4 schools and in response expands with 6 from the AAC, which would be 5 all sport members they will not be strong enough to get off the mat.
B12 (Texas, OU, OSU, TT)
AAC (Houston, Memphis, Tulane, Cincinnati, UConn, UCF)
You bring up that UC, USF and UConn were able to rebuild a conference but what you are missing is it wasn't all done at once which makes it fundamentally a different situation. They had schools on the hook thinking a 6-8 million dollar per school TV deal was in the wings.
An AAC with just Temple, USF, Navy, ECU, SMU and Tulsa isn't going to fly. SMU and Tulsa will joining the MWC. Navy back to Indy. TV contract will be flushed down the toilet.
If you're a MAC school, you sit tight in the MAC and see if you can poach a few AAC or CUSA schools when S@H! hits the fan.
