We aren't talking about Penny vs. Bruce Pearl...we aren't talking about Penny vs. Gregg Marshall...we aren't talking about Penny vs. Archie Miller...we aren't talking about Penny vs. Buzz Williams.

We are talking about Penny vs. Steve Forbes. Penny vs. Brad Underwood. Etc.

Sure - I think would both would do well here. But it's not like we are talking about hiring him over a proven stud.

Everyone is so afraid of him failing. A) I don't think he will B) what if he's great? You wouldn't be able to buy a ticket!!

I know Josh has sucked all the hope out of Tiger Nation, but think WHAT IF...WHAT IF he recruits at a high level, motivates, and wins big games? He'd bring the city together like no other...

He isn't going to be an assistant

then I already don't like him. if he really believes he can be a miracle worker, and he may just be the only one, without the benefit of D1 coaching experience, then he'll have to be.

it may seem I'm changing my tune as the thread goes on, but if he's that confident he could make a big difference as our coach, I'd feel alot better if he was realistic about his short comings.

I assume that's what you're alluding to.

Experience is his only shortcoming. Probably the best player with probably the highest bball IQ we've ever had. NBA all-star. Will have player's respect from day 1. Go for big name. Use Penny as backup plan.

This would be a potentially program-killing hire. I am not an alarmist, but face it, we are averaging less than 6k/game and if we make another bad hire, we are doomed to becoming St. John's, Houston, DePaul. Formerly very good programs that are located in NBA cities and all are totally irrelevant on ANY scene whatsoever.

Hoiberg spent 5 years in an NBA office before becoming HC. Penny's post-NBA experience is greater than that. Ollie had 2 years as AC before taking over as HC.

Penny's resume is not ideal. But he is Penny. I used to oppose the idea. But he might be the right guy to help us out of the financial/apathetic mess.

Hire Penny and get him some good assistants.

Head Coach: Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway
Associate Head Coach: Stan Jones
Assistant Coach: Damon Stoudemire or Glen Cyprien
Assistant Coach: Keelon Lawson

Now you get it. Except I would move Keelon to an administrative position, and see if we could get another player getter.

NCAA rules say you can't move Keelon. If he has a son playing, and if he is on the payroll, he has to be full-fledged AC.

Based on what I hear the AAU players say---he seems to command respect.
Is it a risk? Yes. But would be do better than the incumbent? I really do think so.
And he is a bigger splash hire than any of the names we've heard being mentioned as realistic candidates. And I don't think we would have to break the bank on the front end to hire him.
Other than that little issue of 10 mill for JP.
Thoughts???

for every Clyde Drexler, there are also people like a Steve Spurrier or say Bryce Drew of Valparaiso who succeed in coaching at their alma maters. His brother Scott coaches Baylor...

uh Penny coaches at East High? Ranked #15 in high school basketball IN THE COUNTRY!?
I realize that there is a difference in basketball at the high school to college level...but that is mainly the speed and the strength of players in the college game.
Jimmy Johnson formerly of Dallas had never been a pro coach before...and you remember what he did in Dallas.

Honestly, I used to say certain things were impossible, or would never happen. After the plan to renovate Sears Crosstown came to fruition, my outlook changed. I'm sure there are bigger "impossibles" like putting a human on the moon, but hey...

Let Penny coach the Tigers. He might surprise us all. Keelon won a high school state championship as a coach. He'll hire Todd Day and Tony Madlock I'm sure. These guys know something about winning basketball games.

for every Clyde Drexler, there are also people like a Steve Spurrier or say Bryce Drew of Valparaiso who succeed in coaching at their alma maters. His brother Scott coaches Baylor...

But neither Spurrier or Drew were in a similar situation as Drexler...as Clyde was given the job at UH (when he didn't even have his college degree), as his FIRST Coaching job ever.

Before Spurrier became HC at Florida...he had 4 other coaching jobs (over 11 years)...including as Offensive Coordinator and then came back to be Head Coach of Duke and Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Bandits in the USFL

Bryce Drew was a college assistant coach for 6 years (including the last 5 as Associate Head Coach), prior to being named HC at Valpo.

Penny has ZERO college coaching experience compared to those above.

As any HC in college football or basketball will tell you...90% of the time is about managing coaches/players off the field/court...and about 10% deals with coaching.

That's where college coaching experience usually helps.

NOTE: Doesn't mean Penny could "be the one" that could make the leap to college HC, especially if he was able to hire a very EXPERIENCED College Coaching Staff that would obviously do much of the management/scheduling/teaching, etc...but to compare Penny to someone like Spurrier or Drew just shows the person who did that didn't know much about either of them.

WOW you really are reaching. Clear by his comments that he does NOT want the job. His comments could not be any clearer.

Are you truly that dense? Reading comprehension isn't your forte I see.

The program is running on fumes now, it's basically on life support. There's not much you can do to it that can hurt it any more than its already been hurt. And when you say he has zero experience it makes me think you must not be aware that he's coaching high school ball. While the competition level and administrative duties are different the game itself is built on fundamentals, he knows how to coach, and if results are your benchmark then he's doing it quite well. To take the next step up is s logical progression. While that next step may typically be at the assistant level I again assert that he can do no worse than the current leadership in skipping that level. It's what Josh basically did.

Penny would relate to players on a whole different plane than Josh also.

This makes more sense. I would love to see Penny as coach. He has been successful on the AAU circuit, and at the HS level.
I would hate it for him when he loses his first game; this board can be brutal.
At this point, almost any coach would be better.
I would think Penny has more to lose by becoming a college coach--endorsements from companies, his free time, etc--but if he is ready to take that step, then go for it.
I also think that if he feels he is in over his head, he would bow out gracefully, rather than to continue to run the program into the ground
