RE: Hardaway addresses Memphis job
This sounds like Penny really does want the job. I am torn. I think of Clyde Drexler at Houston.
Like everyone else, I would hate to see Penny not succeed at the program he helped build.
Conversely, is there a better or well known name in the world to oversee the Memphis Tigers brand? He is smart, articulate, respected. He is a superstar. And he seems to want to take on this challenge. He would absolutely be able to recruit. He would drive ticket sales immediately.
Based on what I hear the AAU players say---he seems to command respect.
Is it a risk? Yes. But would be do better than the incumbent? I really do think so.
And he is a bigger splash hire than any of the names we've heard being mentioned as realistic candidates. And I don't think we would have to break the bank on the front end to hire him.
Other than that little issue of 10 mill for JP.
Thoughts???

You mentioned Drexler. Also Chris Mullin at St. John's. He is getting killed in NYC.

WOW you really are reaching. Clear by his comments that he does NOT want the job. His comments could not be any clearer.

You mentioned Drexler. Also Chris Mullin at St. John's. He is getting killed in NYC.

Then there's Fred Hoiberg and Kevin Ollie. Back in the day you had Jimmy Boeheim and Frank McGuire. Some might argue Larry Finch too, though he was a seasoned assistant.

Can't let Drexler be the reason you don't hire him. You just have to be clear on both sides, what the expectations are and how you terminate with destroying, if it comes to it. You do it on the front-end.

I didn't get that at all from his comments, nor did I get that he was definitely lobbying for the job either. He took the highest road possible and said that we all need to support the program and the coach, and that he will support CJP as long as he is the coach of the Tigers.

RE: Hardaway addresses Memphis job
Fred Hoiberg and Kevin Ollie were journeymen in the NBA. NBA superstars do not generally become good college HC's. Plus, Penny has ZERO experience.....both Hoiberg and Ollie had plenty of years of experience before taking a HC job.

This would be a potentially program-killing hire. I am not an alarmist, but face it, we are averaging less than 6k/game and if we make another bad hire, we are doomed to becoming St. John's, Houston, DePaul. Formerly very good programs that are located in NBA cities and all are totally irrelevant on ANY scene whatsoever.

RE: Hardaway addresses Memphis job
give him 2 or 3 years, tops, and see what happens. i think he could recruit on name alone. obviously, a lot of other factors come into play, but there's a lot of players that look up to UoM basketball and would love to represent, in spite of it's current regime. there's no better ambassador for this school than penny. penny would be a good fall back plan if nothing else.
