Both, he was left a strong core but brought in a 5th year and a couple of JUCO's I think. Also the kid who killed us both games sat out last year.
Remember, they are doing this without Casey Jones..

RE: Official Game Thread: Chattanooga (L 68-76)
Much has been made that Forbes has 10 new guys but in reality it boils down to 6. Moore is a walk-on and never supposed to be a factor, Johnson is redshirting, Glass and HMP have to set as well. of those 6 we got 3 front court and 3 back court.
Guyn, Cromer and Bello, combined is an A. Solid very good pickups.
Holley, Luffie and Stokes combined is an F. Weak top to bottom.
We didn't have much up front with Banks returning and Jurkin turned out to be more of project then we hoped.
I know he didn't have much chance to recruit but the front court players brought in this year were a bust, Strike 1,2 and 3.
Cromer and Guyn have turned into homeruns and Bello a solid double.

Just got back to charlotte and the replay is on Fox Sports south. Even though i know the outcome its compelling to watch. Freedom Hall looks good on tv. Could have definitely pulled this game out, too many missed opportunities during the 2nd half rally. Hopefully we meet again in the tournament, its tough to beat a team 3 times!

Bucs have got to keep after it in practice and start converting all those inside opportunities into baskets. We have three great shooters from the perimeter and teams are HAVING to come out and guard them heavily. Instead of letting this beat us we need to use it as a weapon to get the inside shots. I think if we start to do that then we become much harder to guard. Let's get a win Monday night!

I know Tuoyo is a big mismatch for us, but my biggest concern is that we have no answer for Tre Mclean (A combined 54 points in 2 games). He's longer and taller than any of our guards.

Couple of these players are, believe it or not, left over from John Shulman, most are Will Wade kids, most of McCall players are all freshman and haven't gotten much playing time.

I think Matt is a solid coach (who could be great), but he really, really walked in to a great set up. Basically, he came in, kept the team together after being the 3rd coach in 4 years, and didn't screw up the chemistry.

One thing Will Wade recruited exclusively was long arms and high motors (arm length was literally used that as a component in their recruiting). So while the team might be not be overwhelmingly tall, they play "taller" because of their arm length.

I can't believe I am taking up for an ETSU coach, but I think some of you guys are being a little harsh. Forbes had/has a much tougher project after Murry and the years wandering the wilderness of the A-Sun. Maybe that is easier to see from the outside looking in. What you see happening in Chattanooga this year actually took 3 seasons to accomplish.

ChattanoogaMocs, you are absolutely correct! Had we not changed coaches, we would be looking at about 5 wins right now.

If anyone looks at our front court right now - the guys getting most of the minutes are Banks & Jurkin - Both are Bartow recruits. Banks is a guy who is average at best, bad at worst. He really tries hard, I'll give him that. Jurkin can intimidate at times, but is a major project. Lufile we got for nothing, and he hasn't turned out to be much. Holley still needs more seasoning, and same w/ Stokes, but give them time.

Everyone nicely forgets about AJ's injury when talking about the coach. As bad as we played against the Mocs, we lost by 8. Honestly, I think if we had played a decent game, we are there, and a good game we win it decisively.

Cromer is an emerging star, and he'll be all league next year, likely first teamer. I think Jason Williams was a really nice land, and we have 2 schollys to go IF no one transfers - and someone will almost definitely transfer, especially from the front court. Forbes took us to playing for the league lead in mid-February, and we have an excellent shot at the 2 seed. My prediction is all the ultra critics will be eating crow. They're probably the same group that called Cuonzo "Clownzo." How'd that work out?

I have only seen our resident bi-polar poster really come down 100% against Forbes. If we win tournament he will post 100% in favor of Forbes and never look back. Forbes recruited on a short time frame, had some hits had some misses. Be interesting to see what he brings in with a year to recruit.

I couldn't agree more, Rod. Jason Williams looks like a good start - a guy who can really score from the PG position, had 1,000 points in his HS career before his senior year even started. Bartow left a really empty cupboard, and that's to be expected, to some extent - he was fired. Chattanooga's coach left to move up the ladder. But I still think we can make some noise in Asheville, and hopefully we make a positive move towards that tomorrow night.

Besides Jason Williams, I think Shemar Johnson and T.Stokes are a great foundation for sustained success.

I never got the hate for Cuonzo Martin, even after he got Tennessee into the Sweet Sixteen. Plus he's a Purdue guy, so I love him.

RE: Official Game Thread: Chattanooga (L 68-76)
It really is a step up what Forbes has done already. I'm only a bit disappointed by the recurring loss of focus from the team. I don't know if that's coaching so much as chemistry and impatience from the players controlling the offensive game, i.e. when those players' shots aren't falling. The frontcourt needs to be put through boot camp, including some serious hand strength conditioning and passing drills. What is frustrating is that the defense seems to feed on the offense, or depend on it even as a buffer, when this team could be shutting others down with a more aggressive press, a good backup zone option, and an overall emphasis on defense/rebounding over scoring. When the shots aren't falling - stop me if I'm just imagining - it seems like defense disappears too, at least until that press comes in 5 minutes left in the game. Get these players more worried about defense, and the Bucs will outlast anyone in the SoCon tourney.

I hate that UTC has now beaten us 4 straight times. We need to figure out how to start beating them and sadly it won't get any easier. For some reason I thought that Tuoyo was a Senior but he isn't, just a junior. So he, McLean, Pryor and I'm assuming Casey Jones as well, will all be back next year.

I don't see any reason why they won't be even better again next year. 03-hissyfit03-hissyfit

Jones will indeed apply for a medical redshirt.

Mocs return 7 of their top 10 in playing time per game played from this past season: Jones, Tuoyo, Pryor, Ester, McClean, Burroughs-Cook, and Peyton Woods.

If, yes I know if is a big word, the Bucs had hit half of the layups they missed and half of the free throws they missed and gotten back on defense, the Bucs would have beaten the Mocs. I'm not even asking foe less turn overs or doing something unbelievable Just playing basic basketball would have gotten a win.

Having been to some practices, the coaches stress all of the things this board points out as weaknesses. It's up to the players to get it done and some do, some won't and some can't.

The ones that won't and can't will be gone

Forbes told everyone that the group left by mubar were now his guys and he would not run off anyone. He took the those guys and mixed them with newcomers to try and become a instant SoCon contender rather than a pretender.

Banks hardly played at all his freshman year and played off and on his second year. Bradford road the pines ( Why ), AJ, Petey and Wilson were the only three that had significant playing time besides Devin Harris, who left the team.

Returning a little used 4/5 ( Banks ), a partime starting pg ( Petey, who doesn't score ), a 3/4 ( Wilson, who plays little or no D ), Bradford ( very little game experience ) redshirt Peter, coming off a bad leg injury and not playing for two years, the team playing almost exclusively zone defense and a short window for the new staff to recruit......How in the world are the Bucs vying for second place in the SOCon ?????????

Answer.........................Forbes and his Staff
