Given the current state of many of Purdue's programs, I'm surprised he wasn't forced out already. Anyone with more knowledge of their situation able to shed more light on that for us?

So he buys himself an extra year by announcing retirement in July 2017? If only he worked as hard doing his job as he is doing to prolong it.

I don't have much more knowledge, but Purdue is one program that operates revenue neutral (or may even send money back to the academic side). That company it keeps with a very select number of schools, most of whom have far greater advantages. Granted I think that comes with a pretty big cost for them, but I can imagine it is not an easy AD job and the powers-that-be aren't as concerned with success as most its fans.
