Our new number 1 recruit according to Scout is Matt Lorbeck ILB 6'3" 220 lbs. from Wisc. Scout now rates him #3 ILB in Wisconsin, and #21 nationally. I saw a photo of him with coach Carey and they appear to be the same height. Carey goes around 6'5" in height. # 2 is Nixon DE 6'4" 280 lbs. also from Wisc. #3 is QB Hall from Mich. The second shocker comes in at our #4 recruit, Jordan Nettles is listed as the #2 RB in Illinois and # 56 nationally. Rounding out our top 5 is OL Issac Hawn. I know that this is Scout Inc. opinions, but this is a very current update to their rankings. Lorbeck appears to have experienced a growth spurt in weight also and may grow into a DE according to some folks. Nettles was also a shock as a under the radar RB. It will be interesting to see if 247 sports, rivals, or ESPN do any updates. Rivals used to be very good and ESPN was just OK, but Rivals has fallen behind 247 and Scout as far as current analysis, IMHO.
Theta, thanks for the info but one minor correction, Scout ranks Lorbeck as the #3 ranked ILB in the Midwest and the #1 ranked ILB in Wisconsin.

This is from a while ago but did he truly decomit?
I think Nixon is a goner at any minute now.
Ya Nixon is as good as gone. Rowell did decommit and has since gone completely silent on his Twitter w recruiting stuff. We need his girlfriend who is a NIU Women's Golf signee to do the heavy lifting for us down the stretch here and get him locked down. Him leaving for Iowa wouldn't have shocked me, but WKU....

Someone posted an article a month ago stating why Rowell re-opened his recruiting. He kept his recruiting open so that his other teammates could get noticed by scouts. With him being committed scouts stopped showing up. I don't think we've lost Rowell. Nixon is a harder one to figure out though. I'm sure there's a backup plan if we don't get these guys.

Welp, if you never lose one you're probably not aiming high enough. In the mean time we'll find out what last minute surprises our coaches have up their sleeve.

It's sad when we can't beat out bad P5 schools like Purdue.

We do beat out schools like Purdue sometimes. Honestly what does NIU offer that Purdue doesn't though? A "winning tradition"? Not really. You need to accept that there are probably 80 other programs in the country that have as good of or a better sales pitch than NIU. Facilities, fan support, quality of education, road trip experiences, coaching staff quality, overall student life, campus vibe, etc.

We do have a winning tradition, a very good one. Until we gave the car keys to Carey so he could drive it right into a wall.
Besides, if we ever want to take the next step, we can't keep losing recruits to the Purdue types. If we continue down the path of taking on kids with little or no offers then we won't ever get to that next level of consistently winning bowl games.

We had five great years in a row...largely due to the fact that the MAC is a well below average football conference. That hardly qualifies as a winning tradition. NIU is 273-289-4 all time. We have been ranked for a total of 23 weeks in the AP poll and finished one season ranked. Purdue has been ranked for 273 weeks and finished 17 seasons ranked. This doesn't even touch on the plethora of other factors that play into recruiting decisions.

You're talking about a historical record as if that really matters. No one cares how good NIU was 20-90 years ago. This is a what have you done for me now culture of sports. NIU athletics posted an informational graphic last year that showed NIU had a top 10 win-loss record over the previous 10 (?) seasons. Additionally, your total win-loss record is wrong. NIU has a winning record over its football history.
Also, AP poll is garbage. Its a bunch of biased journalists voting for who they think are the top 25 teams.

Next step is like I said above, consistently winning bowl games. We need to get rid of Carey first, since now we can't even make bowl games with him leading us.
