Pre-spring QB rankings
Not that it means a lot, but...

126. Nate German, Rice

German is an intriguing prospect for coach David Bailiff, but he has only two pass attempts in his career. He spent 2015 at receiver and caught 18 passes for 379 yards and three scores.

Guess #126 is becoming the Owls football number.

German is our most athletic quarterback. He can throw and run. He needs to be our starter. He needs to hold the ball on every play.

I also understand he injured his shoulder in our last game vs. Charlotte, and may be limited during Spring Practice.

RE: Pre-spring QB rankings
Not a popular opinion, but I think that we should keep Nate at WR.
No disrespect to the other players, but he is our most explosive option at that position right now.

Breakaway speed? Yes
Good hands? Yes
Ability to get open? Yes
Good size? Yes

These are the WRs returning for 2016:

James Mayden (limited)
Lance Wright (showed flashes before injury)
Darrion Pollard (Injured most of 2015)
Zach Wright (Dependable - Possession type)
Temi Alaka (Played well down the stretch)
Jesse Hudek (Walkon)
Parker Smith (limited)
Aston Walter (did not see the field IIRC)
Cameron Johnson (Walkon)
Trevor Long (Mostly Special teams play)
Cameron Decell (limited)
T.J. Gotelli (Walkon)
Aaron Cephus (True freshman)
Kylen Granson (True freshman)
Jordan Myers (True freshman)

Of course, that would mean that QB would come down to four players:

Tyler Stehling (SR)
JT Granato (RS FR)
Jackson Tyner (RS FR)
Sam Glaesmann (True Freshman)

I have no reason to believe either ranking is not accurate.

Why would anyone expect it to be higher? Like they said, he has 2 pass attempts in his career. The interesting thing to me is German is the one they picked for Rice. And I'd rather see him at QB. Our best years in recent history have been when our QB can make plays with his legs. I also look at Houston with Ward. It's a big equalizer for line/defensive talent

WE need to work on our accuracy.

We are trying to hit Top 25 per JK. But we aren't very accurate with respect to our aim.

I don't have a problem with that, assuming we have someone ready to play QB. And I am not convinced of that yet.

I choose to look at the glass half-full, maybe the coach can get us up to #120 or #119 if everything breaks his way according to his plan.

I agree. I haven't been impressed with Stehling at all. He lacks the athleticism that we need at QB. Starting Stehling would be such a waste of talent, not to mention, he graduates after one season. German could start for two years, while we also groom Granato and Tyner for the future, which touches on the point you were making on Monday that we need to develop players at key positions before they're upperclassmen. The receivers need to step up so German can play his natural position.

Not to stir the pot, but among the depressing things about the 2015 Rice football season is the fact that 2016 QB prospects are..totally up in the air. Nobody with any real experience. In 2016 I look for a season with several QB's getting playing time. That's seldom a good thing.

Yup. And it's only a matter of time that we hear that we lost our starting QB, our prospects are freshmen and this is a rebuilding year and Bailiff can't be expected to do Better than 5 wins and if you think otherwise you should go cheer for Ohio State etc etc

We are back to where we were in 2009, which ended up 2-10. We're in a weaker league now, so I'm expecting 3-9.

You always put your best athlete at quarterback. You want him to touch the ball as much a possible. That is why Thor would have been our quarterback his senior year if he stayed at Rice. Knowing Bailiff, the oldest player will be at quarterback.

Quite the exaggeration there... We lost all of our offensive talent after 08 and some defensive players that in hindsight were not bad.

Next year we have a new QB but the line shouldn't shuffle as much as it did this year, we have great depth/skill at RB and our TE and receiving group doesn't lose much.

On defense we are returning a lot of guys who were supposed to start but were injured on the line and our most heralded Dline class in recent memory will have their first full offseason of strength training in college.

The secondary we just have to hope for improvement but I don't think you can say we are any worse than 09... If anything we seem to have some athletes back there.
