NBR whoa: Memphis Tigers could get bounced from Fedex Forum
Glad we have our own building

Tigers want to renegotiate lease with Memphis Grizzlies.

If the turnstile count averages below 6000 for2 consecutive years, Grizzlies can terminate the contract. No one claims to know the turnstile average this year, but it has been estimated by media to be between 6000 and 7000.

The Pyramid is now a big Bass Pro Shop. They have nowhere to play if they leave Fedex.

Would it be hard for Memphis to come up with $90 million to build a new basketball arena?

Even if they started today no way could it be finished before next season.

It'll probably be worked out. The Grizzlies are a smart business organization. The realize the majority of their fan base are also Tiger fans, albeit disgruntled due to Pastner. They want risk angering their own fan base.

But the fact that the Tigers have fallen so far that that clause could be exercised is startling.

Hope our new football arena at BJCC doesn't have any attendance clauses like that.

The fact that their attendance has fallen to around 6000 is really telling.

Yes, but been vacant for about 15 years because it isn't ADA compliant. Most want to tear it down, but because Elvis sang a few songs there, it is on the National Register of Historic Places. Would almost be cheaper to build something else.

Sort of. The city owns it, but it is operated by Hoops Inc, who is the also the owner of the Grizzlies. In effect it is the Grizzlies who calls the shots.

No way would they terminate the contract. I'm more than sure they're okay in that regard. This whole thing really just goes to show you how far they have fallen, but it's not like the program is dead or anything. They showed a lot of patience with Pastner. His seat practically melted under him, and you can only expect that they have been in the process of determining his replacement for a good while.

I'll expect them to be back in a big way sooner rather than later.

Actually you can't assume that. there is belief that the big money people are trying to find away to keep him another year, mainly because his buyout is huge.

If they fire him this year, they will owe him 10.5 million dollars. It would be the biggest buyout of a college basketball coach ever.

Whoever negotiated that contract should be taken out and shot, and I'm in no way a Memphis supporter. That's insane.

It was negotiated when Cal was there and they packed out the place. Nothing in the future coulee possibly go bad. Cal was playing in the Pyramid and wanted his games in the brand new NBA facility. 03-lmfao

Like I said, the Grizzlies are extremely savvy.

Why is his buyout so big?

Because a couple of years ago, he was the greatest player ever....until he wasn't.

He was being considered a few years ago for a bigger job and Memphis panicked, remembering Calipari and gave him a sweet contract to keep a highly ranked recruiting class. Most of that recruiting class ended up transferring and Memphis is left with a coach who can't win, and a huge buyout.

It's a perfect storm. 03-lmfao

While it's interesting, I seriously doubt the Grizzlies would kick Memphis out of the Forum. That would be a massive PR hit.

Wow, damn. That's a case study for sure. I thought he'd be done after this season, but, with a buyout like that, he's good. You can't just eat 10.5 million just to make a guy go away. That really sucks for them.

Perhaps the renegotiation is to get him out. For example, suppose Memphis can come up with $5.5M of the buyout. They could renegotiate the lease terms to add 5 years to the lease with an increase of $1M per year...
