Yep. I just tried to stay out of the way and comfort my wife (failed to do either). I'll be better next time. Hopefully.

When my Wife was in labor with our first we had been at the hospital a little while when my FD pager went off with the Battalion Chief's office number and 911. I figured they were looking for someone to fill in on shift for someone who got sick or injured so out of courtesy I called just to say "Hey, probably not going to be working for the next week or so.." The BC told me "You forgot to fill out your time sheet before you left this morning and they are due tonight." I didn't know what to do because without the time sheet I don't get paid, but my Wife was in labor. So like a dumb*** I asked her what I should do.
It worked out that my wofe ended up needing a C section about an hour later. Immediately after the C section while she was in recovery I ran down to the nearest FD and filled out a time sheet there and they were more than happy to deliver it to the BC for me.

If I can offer one piece of advice to you it would be this. Save up an hire a Doula. It's not really all that expensive and it frees up a Dad to be more supportive in constructive ways.

Really helped one of our delivery's go well.

I've had the range of experience in labor from a dads point of view.

1 - Epidural
1 - Induced
1 - Natural In Hospital with Dula
1 - At home in water with a Midwife

Of the four I really recommend Natural in the hospital with a Dula. We did home for the final child because my wife did not want to sleep in a hospital afterwards.

But she said if she had it to do over she might have done hospital witha dula again.

I would stay eternally single before I dated any of those ladies.
