CBSSports - 'Pastner on hot seat, Memphis collapses'
http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketba...onnecticut

....Josh Pastner is now 5-25 all-time against AP Top 25 teams. And these are the kinds of numbers -- combined with a 13-9 record and recruiting class that's ranked outside of the top 50 -- that are starting to stack up and put Pastner's job security in serious question.

I mean, the lead sports columnist for The Commercial Appeal, Geoff Calkins, already called for a coaching change (effective after this season) following last month's home loss to East Carolina. Meantime, fans are publicly debating whether the school could even actually afford to pay Pastner's $10.6 million buyout.

Yes, his buyout is $10.6 million.

If paid, it would be the highest-paid buyout in college basketball history....

Honest question...why would Pastner even have a 10.6 million buyout? That is insane.

As I understand it, that figure is not a buyout. It is the total of his salary owed through the 2019-2020 season which would have to be paid if he is fired, paid over 4 years.

That money has already been budgeted for his salary. Memphis does not have to come up with it as a new expense. That money will be paid regardless of whether Pastner remains as the head coach.

The problem of course is coming up with the new expense of a new coach's salary on top of the already allocated expense for Pastner's salary.

Is there a mitigation clause? Where if Pastner leaves and finds another job, then his Memphis monthly payments get reduced dollar for dollar by whatever his new salary is?

Maybe they could make him a towel boy. Just reassign him.

I think Pastner is close to cracking, he will abandon ship on his own eventually.

I'd be shocked if they don't ride it out to the end of season to avoid that buy out.

They would still owe 10.6 million. There is no "buyout" clause...just the remainder of his contract through 2020. Everyone wants him gone, but he did the better job negotiating several years ago when everyone thought he was the second coming of Mike Krzyzewski. He had the #2 class that year if I remember correctly. Bad timing and bad decisions03-banghead

the 10.6 is if we do that...if we did it now, it would be 10.6 plus what we owe him for the rest of the season.
