RE: AAC Football Indoor Practice Facilities
Not a huge priority at ECU but I am guessing we will eventually get one. We are lucky to have a Goldilocks weather environment with no real extreme weather either direction during Football season. I am guessing a few times in the month of November is the one time our coaches wished they had an indoor practice facility. As stated in this thread most the ACC schools in our state practiced just outside but now they have so much money from P5 living that they decided to get indoor practice facilities. My guess is they are more useful during off season training when just the Strength and Conditioning coach can work with the team. Our guys are outside with Coach Connors at 5:30 AM in the cold grinding it out

JHG, a while back there was some rumblings about putting a removable bubble (similar to what Cincinnati has) over the practice field, is there any truth to that?

It's more about recruiting than weather.

I disagree. August, September and October are hurricane weather in ENC and that can have significant effects on the limited practice time. When tropical systems come in, it can take as much as a week to go through.

I do believe ECU has bigger fish to fry with its Southside, BUT it would be great if through the fundraising of the Southside a IPF was included and located on the White Lot. All sports could use it.

Had to kind of laugh at Temple's "Red Zone" IPF.

USF doesnt have one and its not a huge priority. Living in Florida has advantages. We recently build all new practice facilities and may build an IPF later but we have difference things we want right now. I think last year only 2-3 practices had to be moved inside... good weather has its advantages.

I think FSU finally built one a year ago... not certain if UF even has one.

A story from last year - a freshman player getting ready for practice on a stormy day asked if the team was walking or driving to the indoor practice facility. Matt Rhule laughingly told him the IPF is for recruiting, we practice outside.

Florida weather is nice usually yes, but rain and especially thunderstorms are commonplace in the spring and summer. Not having to worry about practices being called or delayed over lightning is great.

Although not sure with the gulf right there if it reduces the amount of thunderstorms near your campus versus a slightly more inland area like Orlando.

Because the I-4 Corridor between Orlando and East Tampa is the lightning capital of the US, safety (let alone pounding thunderstorms) was the main reason why UCF built their indoor facility some 10 years ago...as lightning alone (even without rain) would shutdown so many practices.

Now, with multiple lightning detectors on campus, it gives a warning in advance for the football team to head indoors.

Just going by historical fact that we have not missed any extended period of practice time outside of the Great Flood. Steve Logan wanted a practice facility and I think there is no reason we can't get one. We have enough contractors who are Pirate Club members to slap one up and just give them more priority points. It is more about recruits and if we had one we might use it 10% of the time. It gets my vote for Baseball to use it during Jan-Feb-March if they can't get onto the Baseball field. I think it would be a cool marketing piece to the recruits if they finally leveraged the new Skull and Cross Bones logo on a building. We cold make a practice facility look pretty bad ass with the right designer

yep but Its just not that critical. Last year we lost 2 practices due to storms in the area. A couple had to be delayed but it really doesnt affect us that much.

Whenever we build one well go in the $15 million range for something nice. Your IPF is really more of a warehouse with turf....thats why UCF had to put policies in place for days that you can use it since temperatures reach over 100 in there. Time for an upgrade.

Well, for UCF, it was...as UCF needed to do it (and they did), even though $$$ (back when UCF was finishing their MAC days and headed into CUSA) were almost non-existent.

Its obviously been a great investment that has paid off in a lot of ways.

so uconn and ucf are the only ones with IPF?

temple has a quarter field sized indoor center, which is a re-purposed building and technically Houston has an indoor athletic center for all sports that can be covert to indoor football facility (half field) (but for some reason our football team never uses it)..navy also has a "athletic center" that can be converted to an indoor football facility (full field), not sure if they ever use it though

cincy has an optional bubble

memphis will start building one in few months

houston & smu plan to have in the next 3 years

am i missing anyone?

Again, the plan is to build something once the stadium plan is finalized. I think there was talk about putting a bubble up, but the repurposed rec center is sufficient for the time being. So figure in the next 2-4 years we'll have one up.

its not a joke at all. If you have one or are building one it shows an intent to keep up with the Jones. If not you are just short arming your program hoping for a life line.

Memphis does have a 50 yard turf room. One of the very first in the south, it was a part of the original football complex built back in the early 70's & rebuilt after a fire in 2002

I haven't spent a lot of time in Florida, but I can vouch that when I was staying on Anna Maria Island last month, a storm came through with probably the most intense lightning I have ever seen. It was the night the two tornadoes touched down in Sarasota. We get our fair share of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in Ohio, but the lightning was more frequent and intense than I can ever recall witnessing.
