RE: Franklin or Strong? Brighter future?
People looked at Vanderbilt's records under JF, and couldn't get past the fact that it was Vandy. Don't bother those who were screaming for him when in his two good seasons at VU, he had one notable win against a team that gave up on the season the previous week.

JF's never going to get ones over Meyer, Harbaugh, or Dantonio. So, that makes his ceiling no higher than nine a season.

Yet, because leadership at Penn State can tell the crazies there to shut it, James could hang around a long time, probably like their men's basketball coaches. Strong, who has won games he probably shouldn't while at Texas, doesn't have that luxury. Strong is undoubtedly the better coach, but has a tighter leash...he'll never enjoy the kind of padding Franklin already has.

I disagree with the other poster who thinks Franklin is a jerk. One can be a good guy (at his roots, I don't think Franklin is bad or evil), but also be a clown who says dumb stuff. I certainly don't think Franklin is good enough to compete at elite levels.

Strong has the better future, IMO.

Franklin started mouthing off at a UGA player when at Vanderbilt. He nearly got in a fight with Georgia's defensive coordinator who was defending his player. That qualifies as a jerk.

He also fired an equipment manager who worked there for years for no good reason.

He uses his family as a guise to look good. It is tough to live in Happy Valley and deal with Franklin fans. Army had him on the ropes and we let him escape.

That defeat still bugs me.

Harmon, I can tell.

Zombie, what did you think of my metaphor? You want to compare Texas with PA, straight up? Huh? Texas has 10x more elite recruits than PA does. So, Texas "competing" with "everybody" for Texas state recruits...is only comparable with lumping PA/MI/IN/OH as one big state.

I know UM/OSU didn't take many recruits from PA overall...but PSU essentially dominated MD/NJ/PA in the 2015 class. OSU and UM got far more of the top recruits in those rich border states than they did in the 2015 class. If UM and OSU didn't have the huge upswing last year (Harbaugh and national title, respectively) that they did, PSU--whose performance on the field in 2015 was better than Texas's--would have easily been a top 10 class like it was in 2015. Texas had less competition than normal for their over-abundant recruiting territory.
