Larry porter of basketball
Tonight I felt like I was watching a Larry porter equivalent of basketball.

A few key differences. I actually liked Larry Porter. Larry Porter was a Tiger. Larry Porter was at least had experience before getting here. Josh Pastner is no Larry Porter.

Experience? He was a RB coach they both tried to kill their respective sports at this university

That experience was HEAD AND SHOULDERS above what Josh had. Josh's biggest qualification for getting hired was he happened to be loading his car in the damn parking lot.

Come on. JP has been to 4 NCAAs and that is not our standards, but it's not nothing. Porter didn't have a .500 record once.

I'm done with JP's tenure, but let's not go this far, it seems unsporting.

And he was a TIGER! I can't believe this is even a discussion. Larry should still have the respect of our fans. Josh has been given seven years to absolutely TORCH the program.

Porter was categorically worse but what Josh is doing to this program, from many angles, is easily worse than Porter just not being a good head coach.

Not disrespecting Porter, but his teams and coaching were a mess.

Tonight's game was a mess and that was my comparison.

Porters teams were slightly worse than what he inherited...

Pastners teams were WAAAAAY worse that what he inherited...

I get the distinction, but Pastner's tenure will have accomplishments and high notes that are worthy of fond memories, even if his overall tenure needs to come to an end.

I'm not sure I can point to a similar trail in Porter's tenure.

Still, I do understand (and share) the frustration.

Larry Porter in his 2nd year couldn't get his team to line up in a legal formation

I get what you guys are saying (and full disclosure, Larry is the only coach I've known personally) but Josh has had seven years to accumulate a few minor positive notes, and he had a helluva lot better situation in which to accomplish them. Larry has gone on and is on staff right now at UNC. I can't imagine Josh ever having another meaningful job in basketball again. Josh, imho, has not shown at any point that he is a better coach than Larry

and have most of his coaching staff not understand "why" it was an illegal formation. i think they lined up twice in a row to start the season off if memory serves me correctly.

Haha true. But in 7 years Josh hasn't been able to convey what in the hell his offense is.

RE: Larry porter of basketball
Josh Pastner rolled in on the hype train after the best 4 year run in our history. It's a fair comparison. We had the hype behind us after Cal left so CJP was able to recruit good from 2009-2013. Those recruits allowed CJP to mask his coaching inabilities while beating up inferior CUSA teams for years. Larry porter didn't have that luxury. If CJP was hired after Tic Price then he would have been canned in two years because he would not have been able to recruit at a high level. CJP also would have been canned in two years if we played in a better conference like the old big east or acc. Difference between Larry Porter and CJP is one had circumstances where he could hide his coaching inabilities while the other didn't. Just think of it like this, each coach was and is a like a disease to our sports program. One coach is aids(die slow) and the other was ebola(die fast).

Stop comparing Pastner to Porter! Larry didn't have goofy one-liners.
