RE: 2016 Football Schedule
I don't care about anything but getting to a bowl game and good quarterbacking.

RE: 2016 Football Schedule
Pretty tough schedule for next year.
We will learn a lot about Wilder this coming season.
I will be able to tell if we are going to our first bowl by half-time of the Hampton game. If we don't roll over Hampton, its going to be a lonnnngggg season!

Understood, but 2017 schedule gets much tougher.

I am afraid 6 wins this year wont get us a bowl game. Last season CUSA had 7 secured bowl berths, this year only 5 are secured.

We've only "rolled over" Hampton once, in 2012.

If App State shuts us out again, we have a problem.

I guess my question is, why do we have to open our home schedule with an FCS team? I'd rather have the FCS game somewhere in the middle so the team can use it as sort of a bye week. A lot of teams have their FCS game later in their schedule.

I'm not saying schedule Alabama, (although I bet they'll come) but at least make the opening day game a challenge. One that fans can't wait to see.

If ODU insists on opening with an FCS, there are better programs out there than these two. I'm not sure why Coach Wilder wants a long term scheduling relationship with these 2 programs. I'm sure the fans didn't ask for it. If it's home opener day, fans should be excited about the game. The game shouldn't feel like a charity exhibition.

It's a good tune up game, especially considering all the moving pieces we've got going into next season. Take UMASS, which is a very winnable game for us. But if we play that team the first game then we could very well lose, and lose badly, since we haven't seen what works out at game speed.

FCS in the middle of the season also works pretty well as a faux-bye, but an actual bye is probably the best bye. I think that game is move valuable in the beginning of the season for now.

Yeah, there's a lot of reasons why we should play local FCS teams. Does it HAVE to be every year? No, but in the eyes of the bowl organizers, NSU=HU=JMU=UR=W&M=Howard. A rotation of NSU-UR-HU-JMU-W&M would probably be a good way to play quality FCS teams as well as local teams.

Wouldn't that apply to UMASS as well? I can see both sides to the argument. A little FCS variety would be nice. Opening weekend could be a little more exciting if we played a little higher competition. On the other hand, banking a win to start aint all that bad.

Yeah, but that's a roll of the dice, and most coaches don't rely on chaos when they only have 12 games to prove their worth.

If we knew more about our team heading into next season, then I could see Wilder going with a G5 home opener since the risks associated could be lower than what we see right now. For this next season, I can definitely understand trying to find some stability early in the season. Especially considering the next two weeks (@App, @NCSU).

RE: 2016 Football Schedule
My guess is that NSU/HU come at a lower price since their costs are less to come here. Also, at this stage, JMU, UR, WM & LU could very well sneak up and beat us. I'd love to play them, but only if they move up to FBS so it doesn't hurt if we do drop one to them. Even HU and NSU are capable of beating us. NSU has come close to pulling it off twice. If you're playing an FCS team you definitely need to win. It should be a glorified scrimmage that counts toward rankings.

I wouldn't worry too much about the number of C-USA Bowl tie-ins. Yes they are down at this point over last year. We're hearing that there is interest from ESPN to start 2-3 additional bowls on top of what there was last year. I'm surprised by that personally but if the bowls are there they will try to fill them and a 6-win team will always take precedent over a 5-win team no matter the conference tie-in. And with 4 or 5 (I can't remember the number) 5-win teams last year making it to a bowl game, I don't have too much concern that a 6-win C-USA school will get shut out of a bowl. Will be interesting to watch how many of these new bowl games actually make it to the table and if C-USA gets tied into any of them.

Why would you want to play good FCS teams, it defeats the purpose of playing them in the first place. The best rule for scheduling FCS opponents is don't schedule any you might lose to.
