Most likely but he did have Lynch. Fuente seems to be more of a builder type coach than a rah rah get em fired up guy. He certainty has more to work with than he did when he got here but it's conceivable that they don't make a bowl game this year.

It's a tough business and coaches live and die by their decisions. I do not fault CJF for moving on and in fact am thankful for what he did for this program. I will neither celebrate his successes nor his failures elsewhere. All I know is that he's no longer a Tiger so if we ever are on the opposite sideline I hope we curb stomp his team into paste.

It will be interesting to see what they become under Fuente.
It seems that the ascension of Clemson has had an impact on VPI to some extent.
They have a decent amount of players returning, but only a couple are all-conference type performers.
The UTk game in Bristol will be one helluva measuring stick.
They'll get stomped into oblivion by UT; Fuente will need a few years to get his feet under him.
But the Coastal Division of the ACC is terrible and should be wide open for whoever wants to step up and take it. A few good teams (UNC, Miami) but no great ones like the Atlantic (FSU and Clemson).
But that is the trend.
Including this year:
Miami's last five classes in ACC: 2,3,2,4, and 3.
VPI: 4,4,5,3, and 9
UNC: 7,7,4,5, and 4.
Recruiting wise-they are trending to be the 3rd best in the Coastal.
Yep, yet they manage to beat Miami more often than not.
Al Golden.
And Randy Shannon.

I will always be grateful to Fuente for the memories - even at that rain soaked disappointing UT Martin game I could look out and see the semblance of a football team with great things ahead.
I wish him the best and I'm sure he realizes that all fanbases are fickle in their own way.

Yeah 29 or so, nothing to write home about.
30 last season 22 the season before and 17 the year before that calling that no good in recruiting is kinda silly. VA Tech isn't going to give him a couple of seasons to get his footing.
17? C'mon man, they haven't had a class in the top 20 in... a long time. Their best classes were low 20s. Compare that to the best classes of Miami, FSU and Clemson (the programs VTech is competing with to win the ACC). Those programs are routinely in the top 5- top 10 (Miami not so much under Golden). No body who wants to compete for P5 championships is getting jazzed about a 21st ranked recruiting class.
Virginia Tech recruits poorly for a team that wants to compete for conference championships. When BeamerBall was riding high, it wasn't because they were lining up and out talent-ing the other teams like the Bamas and FSUs and Clemsons do, it's because Beamer built up a system that created edges in the defensive and kicking games, and an offense that prevented gving those edges back to the opposing team. He had some good recruits here and there, but it was never a breeding ground for NFL talent like the other big programs in the ACC or SEC.

He's not the coach here, right?
The board's fascination with former coaches is baffling.

He's a great guy. He spent more time here that some of the athletes. Grateful for what he did, it wasn't easy.

Is this guy serious? LOL I am glad you're very optimistic but, y'all will come back down to earth soon enough. VT's program is better than Memphis's program today, tomorrow and every damn day of the year. Admittedly, we are at our bottom but, we have at least a chance to become relevant again. Memphis will never be relevant. Haha... Can't believe you think you could even get close to competing with OSU. Hahahahaha[\quote]

I think Mike Vick qualifies as "out-talenting" the competition.
