Buffalo teachers without contract since 2004
In what has to rate as an example of ultimate intransigence, the Buffalo Teachers Foundation rejected a new contract yesterday. This has been going on since 2004 when the last contract expired.

No one should worry about the teachers as New York State law dictates that when any public sector contract that expires, it continues in effect until a new contract is agreed to. In this case, the teachers have received annual payroll step increases and are enjoying the benefits of a health care plan that by today's standards would be categorized as a Ferrari. Furthermore, their retirement plan hasn't been modified with any of the adjustments that most contracts have seen in the past dozen years. There are substantial work rules that continue to prohibit the district from assigning teachers in a reasonable fashion.

The teachers are holding the school district hostage, reaping unusual benefits relative to today's standards. So that is why they don't want a new contract.

I've never understood why people hate teachers today. They were heroes when I was growing up.

No one hates teachers as a general rule.

We disagree with the teachers who think they deserve automatic raises, cannot be easily discharged if they are poorly preforming, and their supporters who complain about sports stars earning so much.

no one hates teachers. Their union is despicable and some of them need to go. There was a time when we all agreed that teachers were not making enough and most places increased salaries. You can make six figures in NY as a teacher now. However, when things went south and cities had very little money, these unions have decided not to return the favor and just be greedy.

But is it really an automatic, raise or simply an increase to keep up with inflation. I assure you, it doesn't even do that. By the end of my career, I'll probably be making less than I did when I started working when adjusted for inflation.

I remember when this all started. A big deal was the healthcare clan which was better than anything anyone in the private sector could hope for. It even covered, in full, elective cosmetic surgery.

No one hates them. Stop. But they sure as **** aren't "heroes."

We shouldn't throw that term around so often.

A raise is a raise, regardless.

I work for local government. I get no automatic raises. Every year, what we get is largely open to the direction of the politicians. I'm in a professional position. For my twenty years here, including bumps for obtaining professional licensure and promotions, my average raise has not kept pace with inflation.

While I do like me some boobies, I agree that is a personal decision that should be personally paid for. But why hate the union for getting this concession? Why not blame management for giving the union this perk? In every argument I hear against the teacher unions, not one person asks for the heads of the other side of these contract negotiations.

I'll also add that, at least in my local district, it is not hard to get rid of teachers that under-perform. You just need to have strong leadership willing to do so and parents that are willing to speak up for their children.

I posted this on May 21, 2015

Quote:For too long, union contracts were negotiated by politicians whose campaigns were funded by union contributions. As such, the negotiations were not held in an adversarial manner nor at arms length. The politicians should be representing the taxpayers and far too often, they weren't.

Frankly, I'd suggest any contract negotiated between a politician backed by a union, and the union, as fraudulent.

I blame both.

Public sector unions enjoy an enormous advantage in negotiations. And in Buffalo they decided to use that advantage to get a pony.
