Marcus Evans Earns Fifth C-USA Freshman of the Week Award
Evans joins Max Guercy as the only Owls to win the award five times.

HOUSTON, Texas— Marcus Evans was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week in a vote by the media, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.

It is Evans’ fifth Freshman of the Week Award this year. He joins Max Guercy (2012-13) as the only Owls to earn the award five times.

Since the award was created in 2011, Evans is just the fourth player to win it at least five times joining Guercy, Tulane’s Ricky Tarrant (7 – 2012) and UTEP’s Vince Hunter (5 – 2014).Rice is also just the fifth school to earn the award at least six times in a season, joining Tulane (2012), Tulsa (2013) and UTEP (2014).

Evans led Rice to a 95-87 victory over North Texas in its only game of the week. He scored a game-high 25 points while recording four assists, three rebounds and a steal. The Chesapeake, Va., native connected on 6-of-13 (46.2%) from the field, 2-of-4 (50.0%) from three and a perfect 11-of-11 (1.000%) from the free throw line, including 7-of-7 in the final 3:44 to clinch the victory.

Evans has now scored 20-plus points 11 times, tying the Rice freshman record set by Brent Scott in 1989-90. He also became just the fourth Owl freshman to pass the 400-point plateau. His 11 free throws also tied a career-high.

Old Dominion’s Trey Freeman was named the C-USA Player of the Week.
