impact of rules changes in CBB
Saw this tweet from John Gassaway from ESPN:
With 48% of games now in the books, scoring per 40 min in major-conference play up 9% since last year. Pace up 8%, FT rate up 3%.
Pretty significant differences there. With the smallest difference being the FT rate.

RE: impact of rules changes in CBB
With the new rule changes the game has become unwatchable. It's turned into a series of 1-on-1 matchups where the best offensive move is trying to draw a foul. And no one uses their athleticism anymore out of fear of being called for a foul. Yawn. Just like the NBA.
I think I've watched fewer games this year than any year since I was old enough to use the remote control.

I like the new rules. The play is faster. I don't understand the reference to it becoming boring 1 on 1 matchups. Under the old rules, the players would stand around for 10 seconds before they got serious about trying to score. That was boring.
I guess there are different versions out there of what people find unwatchable.
Of course it may help that my favorite team has come out of nowhere to become a top 10 year this year. That may help my enjoyment this year too.

sorry but using their athleticism had become mugging anyone without fear of fouls getting called. Now you actually have to move your feet and you know, play actual defense and not mug ball...

Agreed. I kind of think the game has caught up to Duke/Coach K's stylings with a bit more speed, and further from Big East thug ball, though, ironically, Big East is dominating and Duke is puttering out.
To me, though, none of this matters until we get to the tournament and see how CBS coverage butchers the game in its typical ways.

Agree. It used to be a much better game before they allowed the mugging.

I thought the new rules would clearly favor the Duke's and Kentucky's of the world, by lengthening the games and their having quality depth on the bench to offset possible foul trouble. So I was against any rule change that seems to assist the "haves" in furthering their already significant advantages. This season has been a shock the way it's played out so far. It's been a pleasure to look at the top of the polls with Duke and Kentucky nowhere in sight.

Iowa has had an incredible year so far, in football & basketball.

Definitely a banner year for the Hawkeyes!
