UT Men: 4392 (2nd in MAC, 111 Nationally)
UT Women: 4050 (1st in MAC, 24 Nationally)

Women are third in the MAC overall, behind OU and UT men. Wonder how many teams can say they're third in their conference in overall attendance?

1) so why would any talented women's bball player choose any other MAC program over ours? Why choose to play in front of 450 fans when you can play in front of 4,500?

2) and these numbers are for 2 programs that are arguably middle-of-the-MAC at best this season. Can you imagine what might occur if we ever have a season where not one or the other but BOTH programs are SERIOUS contenders for a MAC title and NCAA bid? With some excitement in the community, mutual vocal support from both K and Cullop, and just a little crossover from these distinct fan bases and we could have averaged for both programs in excess of 5500 a game, with eelpouts for both games of doubleheader switch the right marketing. Hope I live to see it!

In Cullop's early years here she was recruiting a Canadian girl (don't remember who it was) and she was on her official visit. After Toledo got done winning a home game she had attended, she when up to Coach and said, "I don't think I can play here (at Toledo)." Coach asked her why. The recruit replied, "I've never played in front of over 100 people. I can't play in front of 3,000 - 4,000 people like you have."

The crowds can be intimidating to recruits too........

I have wondered if that was potentially a problem...

That's something best put to rest when the recruits talk to the players.

I can see how that might be a problem for some recruits, but the recruits that I would like to see in the program are the type that thrive in the spotlight and draw energy from the crowd, not those that are intimidated by a crowd.

I remember before the WNIT final there was an interview with 3 of the S. Cal players and they were all looking forward to the game and a big crowd. One of them made the point that they liked playing before big crowds even if the crowd was cheering against them.

Wow, somebody missed the mark badly on that one.

And more so on Wells. Recruiting 3 or 4 stars is probably easier than judging how talent might, or might not develop. Nunn is a solid D1 player but no Naama or Bradford.

I don't recall that talent or lack there-of was the road block for either of those two.

Wells wasn't the next coming, maybe not even top ten in the city area at the guard over the last decade regardless the number of stars someone decided to give but still decently skilled and would have been an able player if not for other things.

Nunn as I recall, got injured?

A healthy Nunn is the sixth man, and a solid, but unspectacular player for the 11-9 and early UT victim UIC Flames. Wells was first team all-Panhandle conference and may play for BSU next year. Both have talent. Neither has proven to be as advertised. I'm guessing Cha Sweeney will be remembered long after Wells career is forgotten.

Which doesn't imply that was their destiny. Some people recover from misfortune, some don't, regardless their skill. They may very well have been as advertised, originally. But in Well's case, I'd say, probably not. Wasn't my amateur impression anyhow when she was in hs. Still, she was better than she's showing now. Maybe the situation was a stress she wasn't prepared to handle. Hope she's happy now, regardless minutes and points. Ultimately the job is to be happy and healthy.
